Tech guys get props in the NFL for being smart:

My God! Are you telling me that Chan Gailey is the biological father of James Butler, Gerris Wilkinson and Michael Matthews? Wow, Chan was one happening dude!

no smartass, he is saying that Chan was able to help these guys get in front of the right people so that they could show their skills combined with their smarts would make them good NFL player candidates

show me all the people that O'Leary helped??? you cant, b/c he didnt know barely anyone in the NFL, he had to get his own former player to give him a job there. Chan has a job in the NFL if he wants one, anytime.

so, while Chan might not have been the best fit for GT as a head coach, he DEFINITELY helped our guys talk to the right people in the Sunday league

He didn't know anyone after being a DC in San Diego for 4 years?

I don't know how much or how many he helped to get into the NFL, but I do believe he had contacts.

it wasnt 4 years, it was 2, and his contacts were probably the Charges secretary and Bobby Ross

he was at GT until 91, then was defensive line coach under Ross at San Diego in 92 and 93. Then he came back to GT as the Head Coach

two years as a minor assistant is not anywhere close to 15 years as a coach, coordinator and HC

so, yes, O'Leary never really had "anyones ear" in the NFL while Gailey is extremely well respected

He wasn't DC? I did not realize that. I don't follow pro ball, obviously.

Yeah, it's unfortunate he wasn't better respected by many at GT. He certainly didn't deserve the amount of the venom spewed at him.

agree with you on that. one the one hand, some didnt really give him the slightest chance, but on the other, he could have done better at times making it happen

btw, i really liked O'Leary so dont take my comments as a negative against him, but he was clearly a college guy

here is the link to O'Leary's resume (from RR.com)
http://ramblinwreck.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/oleary_george01.html

also, i made a typo in the original post, should have been "defensive line" coach at SD, not offensive

In his defense, after the resume thing, GOL was able to get the Viking's DC job the very next year.

But I don't think many coaches out there had Chan's record of sending players to the NFL considering how the recruiting services ranked most of our players.

O'Leary got the Minnesota job b/c the head coach was a former player of his (not to say he couldnt coach, but his NFL 'lineage' certainly wasnt there)

Did O'Leary sleep with your girlfriend, BuzzCzar?

Thanks for the link to O'Leary's resume. Interesting read. I had no idea he was the head coach of the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

no, like i said in the thread, i really liked O'Leary and had many discussions with him. there are just things that Chan never got credit for while people were busy pissing on him, and this was one of them that happens to be a BIG DEAL to many players. most of them would like to get a chance to at least try the Sunday league

More interesting than this would be listing the schools NOT mentioned.
