Tech NIL Collective to Launch Tomorrow

From an SI article with Lane Kiffin:

It’s totally changed recruiting. I joke all the time about it. Facilities and all that. Go ahead and build facilities and these great weight rooms and training rooms, but you ain’t gonna have any good players in them if you don’t have NIL money. I don’t care who the coach is or how hard you recruit, that is not going to win over money.

Sounds like the Edge renovation can be cancelled and we should just dump that money into NIL if we really want to try to play this game.

How is creating this NIL fund not a violation of the rule against pay for play? Could the NCAA mess this up any more? They absolutely refuse to just let market forces work and kids get paid by companies for service rendered related to using their name, image, and likeness. Yes, some QB's will get a million dollars and a second string long snapper gets zero. So what? But, each school having to create its own NIL fund to divide up among players will simply demand more donor dollars and stretch limited resources in many programs. This approach is only going to perpetuate the rich staying richer and keeping the competitive disadvantages at status quo.

The schools aren't involved in these collectives. These are unaffiliated organizations that are usually run by school alumni.

IPTAY has become "I pay THOUSANDS a year"

The one positive coming from all of this is going to be watching Clemson fans realize the only thing their program was better at was paying kids under the table. And the one thing their birthday clown of a HC was good at is now obsolete.

Yes, but representatives from the school are putting money in these collectives to be distributed to athletes who will come play for the school. That is pay for play. NIL was meant to allow college athletes on scholarship to leverage their economic benefit based on their name, image and likeness. The NCAA is screwing this up royally and still keeping athletes from personally maximizing their earnings because of the status they have earned as athletes. These schools still want to control their athletes and make sure the big riches stay with coaches and AD’s. They want NIL to be evenly distributed on teams to try and avoid the big payoff to the athletes. And, the schools making the most money will fund these collectives best, keeping their competitive advantage.
The best thing to happen for Georgia Tech would be for us to demonstrate a great player in Atlanta can be worth spending good money for NIL considerations - that way we might get a couple of superstars in football and basketball. Begging for money so that our two and three star players get a nice check is a waste of money. But, a Georgia Tech star player making six or even seven figures through advertising or representation in the Atlanta market might make a difference.

You say this like it wasn't the idea to begin with hah

Yes the NCAA is screwing it up but not for that reason. They need regulations on these type of blanket collectives that are basically pay for play. The NCAA isnt keeping any athletes from signing personal NIL deals or making money on their own off their likeness.

I mean, the Supreme Court is essentially inviting students (or even an intrepid university football program) to sue in order to allow pay for play. The current NIL framework will last until SCOTUS rules that forbidding pay for play is illegal.

Sounds like someone making a bluff. Pure and simple, he doesn’t have either the nil money or the facilities. Only willing to talk.

Even in the SEC there are tiers. If you get out of your tier, the NCAA will come after you. The Mississippi schools are in tier 2 and have been sanctioned before when they threatened Bama and LSU. A&M is attempting to jump up to the first tier. Saban is not happy about it. We will see what happens.

The best thing for GT to do is what GT already has done. Do nothing and drain the pockets of people with blind loyalty. The alternative would be to try and then admit failure. I’m not sure that is going to happen but it’s pretty close on the failure part. There is no reason at all GT cannot compete, it is a choice. The money is there and sports are not a priority.

And given the chance…the Mississippi schools will follow the same as they have done for decades. It doesn’t matter what A&M does or what the NCAA does to them. Same old thing. It’s not changing college football in a positive direction either way.
