The Jackets added another committable offer to their list yesterday when they offered Covaughn Deboskie, a 5’ 11” 187 lb. Running Back from Hamilton High School in Chandler Arizona. Deboske rushed for 1,304 yards and 22 touchdowns in his junior campaign and caught 14 passes for 414 yards and two more scores. He is also a great student who will most likely graduate from high school early.
Evaluation: You gotta love a kid with a great last name like Deboskie. He is an aggressive back with some explosiveness. He is very quick to attack the line of scrimmage. Takes little time to reach top speed and can hit the hole with authority. Has the burst to turn the corner quickly, shows a second gear in the open field and is a threat to go the distance when gets a seam. He is a full-speed runner who can attack creases in-line. He will use a stiff arm to get extra yards after contact. Inside, he shows no fear and will consistently initiate contact. Runs downhill hard and plants and cuts quickly without much wasted motion. Can cut away from penetration and make defenders miss in the hole. He is a reliable receiver out of the backfield and shows soft hands. He is competent on check-downs and flat routes. The issue with Deboskie is that he can be very straight-lined and lacks lateral quickness and overall fluidity. He will take some hits in-line due to his upright running style. Has some stiffness in his play and his vision needs to improve. As mentioned, Deboskie has very good speed, it's just not shifty and there is not a lot of wiggle to his running style, in fact he sometimes appears to have some fullback traits. Overall, Deboskie is a good back who will flash the ability to create some big plays once he gets to the second level.
My Analysis: Deboskie is a fine running back prospect who runs the ball extremely hard. Seems to lack a little in the jitterbug department, but to tell you the truth, few backs are usually effect with that type of running style anyway. Personally, I like north, south runners who will run behind their pads and get up field. Deboskie has some big offers on the table, like Michigan who appears to be the favorite. However, Deboskie values education (business) and early playing time. This will most likely play a major role in his decision. I would look for teams like an Arizona or Arizona State to have a little bit of an edge when recruiting this young man.
