Just wondering...
Who is going to provide the color commentary for the football games this season? I love Wes Durham, and obviously we all miss TYLH. But I never liked Jeff Van Note, not when he was with the Falcons, or for us. We need someone who is A)a Tech guy and B)really knows football. What about Joe Hamilton, since he's been doing some media work, or even better, Ryan Stewart, who is on a nationally syndicated radio show, has a very strong urban media presence, is very entertaining, and could maybe use those assests to help increase the Tech fanbase? Any other ideas for this position?
BTW, I love hearing Wes do the Falcons' games as well.

I volunteer!!! You know how to reach me.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blue.gif

Actually I have done color at a half dozen high school games and play by play and color for basketball. Write sports articles for the local paper too. Even got my Ga Press Assoc pass.

I would love to see Bill Curry back working in some capacity with Ga Tech, but after being passed over on the AD job, I doubt he would consider us for anything else.

I don't see why Curry wouldn't want to do it. The job would be gravy and there would bee less time on the road than ESPN - where he is on the road every week. Strom is also a possibility.

I don't think Joe would because he is still a player.

I'd like Ryan Stewart if he played it straight. No urban influence, no 'Two Live Stews' jive. But it wouldn't happen so I don't have to worry about it.

Hey, how about Coleman Rudolph? Would his on the record criticism of Chan Gailey eliminate him from consideration?

JJ,
you may be dead right on Bill, I just don't think he would leave what he has now for the change, unless he were caught in a monsoon of money and I don't think GT can deliver that.
I'll tell you of someone that I think would be ideal though.
I haven't asked JD if he would even be interested and maybe I shouldn't even mention his name, but I think he Refrigeratormover would be a shoe in for that job, if he were willing to accept it.
It would be worth having someone to do some checking on.
Not too many other men readily have the knowledge base of GT football that he could bring to the table.
Might be something that could be explored just to see if he would be interested.

From what I've read, Bill is not under contract with ESPN and not sure if he is going back this year or not. I would love to have him doing radio with Wes, but The Noter will do it this year.
Maybe next year?

I've heard that Curry is no longer under cntract to ESPN either. He lives in the NC Mountains (3 hours north of Atlanta) and gets into Atlanta alot. He may even have a house in Atlanta. He would have no problem getting here for games and would be outstanding in the role.

Wes and Bill would unquestionably be the strongest announcing duo in college fotball. I wish someone at the AA would contact BC to see if he was interested. I'll bet he would be and it might just be a great way for him to play an important role in GT athletics (like Kim King did) both in and out of the booth.

Who the heck would want to listen to Munson call the GT-UGAy game when you had those two in the booth?

I've always been a fan of Bill Curry since he first stepped onto Grant Field.
When he took over as HC we here were elated.
When he announced that he was leaving to take the Alabama job, we here at our home were deflated.
And of all places, to Alabama.
It was as if we were losing a very basic thread of what we were all about and the jaws of hell were snatching him away.
I'm speaking from emotion, not a business point of view. When I heard that Bobby Dodd advised BC to take the Alabama job, it did make the change easier to take.
Kinda like getting a piece of candy for taking your castor oil, if you know what I mean.
Whether or not Bobby Dodd truly did advise Curry to take that job, I'll never really know, so I'll just take what I've heard for the truth.
It did seem hard for me to believe that Bobby Dodd would advise him to take over at Bama since it was Bama's game that led to GT pulling out of the SEC to begin with.
Do I have an agenda against Bill Curry?
Heavens no!!!!!!!!
But, we do have some very competent GT alumni who have spent their dues on the grid iron too, that would be more than adequate and sufficient to handle that job and do an outstanding job with it.
Would I be against BC having this job?
Emphatically I say no !! but I will also say that there are a couple of others that I would see have first dibs at getting that job.
If for whatever reason it would be refused by any others, then Bill Curry would absolutely be my man.
Personally, I would like to see John Davis to be approached about that position.
I hope I'm not getting JD between a rock and a hard place, since I have not talked with him about it, but I would find it pleasing to get to hear his perspective over the airways.
Can y'all think right off of anyone else who would hold GT up so high?

I would LOVE to see JD

doing the color commentary. He's well respected, had a great college and pro career, and could add a lot to the broadcast.

Same with BC - I think he'd be more interested in the position than most folks think.

AND, believe it - Coach Dodd not only gave BC his "blessing" to go to 'Bama, he told him it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

I hated it when he left Tech but I'm FAR from those alum who basically haven never forgiven the guy. He's class all the way and will always be a "Tech man."

Wasn't Strom our sideline reporter during broadcasts last year?

Yep, Strom was on the sideline last year and did a very good job.

Stewart may have a problem being called the "color" man /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Actually, I don't care much for the Stews, he'd pobably start talking about the NBA or some crap like the stews seem to always talk about. Their show is just loud, not a lot of info, just a loud.

This is what i know about BC leaving for Bammer:

A family friend, who is on the Bammer athletic Board, was on the search committee to replace Ray "Jerk Perk" Perkins. He called my father (a GT grad and president of the GT Alumni Association at the time). He asked my father what he thought of BC. My father said he was well regarded, etc. The Bammer guy said they were selling BC on the fact that he had a better chance of winning a MNC at Bammer than GT.

Evidently BC went back to Dodd and said, "what do you think?" Dodd said it was probably true.

I think Dodd also tod BC that he had refused a postion as head coach at Texas, in the 1950's. He had come to regret the lost opportunity and told BC that.

Whether Dodd ever actually said to take the Bammer job is in question, IMO. But BC must have easily read through the lines, Dodd had given him...

Exactly. I almost swerved off spaghetti junction as I heard the news. Un-imaginable. A TECH man going to Bama. I've long since forgiven and still love CBC. I was pulling for him for AD but would like to see him back at Tech full time in some capacity. We just need his presence. Curry is a stud.

Regardless of who steps in, I just want to say I am thankful that Noter stepped in and did a very good job under difficult circumstances. He knows the game, did not pull any punches, worked well with Wes, and I think he is a real gentleman.

Given the circumstances we could have done a LOT worse.

Maybe Wes really isn't qualified, he has nc mafia blood in him!

The Noter is fine, but how about a broadcast station with a strong signal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dead_horse.gif

If John Davis did this job, the station wouldn't need a stronger signal. He could make up the difference himself. Do you remember when Al Ciraldo used to announce GT and when GT broke huddle he would always say Ga Tech comes to the line led by big John Davis, Biiiiiiiiig John Davis. We used to have fun back then just mocking Al Ciraldo.
