Can somebody who knows this offense please explain to me how wide gaps in the Oline are going to work? Seems like your just inviting the DL in to disrupt the play or worse.

Thanks.

I think it is because it doesn't matter as much what the DL is doing. The play is off the line quick in the TO and the lineman are supposed to be looking to pick up other assignments to the LB's. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the OL is supposed to be adept at getting past the DL to meet other assignments.

Did you see Missouri play last year? They use even larger splits. It forces the DL to spread out also making it harder to disguise your pressure. It also gives natural creases to run/throw from depending on the system.

Thanks for your input on this. Helps understand how different the OL function is in this offense.

Here is an article on Texas Tech's offense which also has wide splits. There is even a blurb on Navy's O (PJ's O).

But basically, I think the wide splits either 1) spread out the DL too or 2) the DL is leaving themselves open to losing contain on a toss sweep. So the B-back must be fast enough to pull that off (Dwyer is easily that fast). I think the wide splits also allow our OL to get angles on the DL/LB rather than blocking them straight up.

Our lack of speed (with PJ Daniels) killed us a few years ago when UVa overloaded the center of the line, even though we didn't have wide splits. That was the year UVa broke our home/home win streak we had going.

Wide splits spread the defense and provide running lanes. As far as the defense getting in the backfield, great ! Thats what you want when running trap plays ! On trap plays, OL are to sidestep the d line and go find linbackers. Trust me, Coach Johnson knows exactly what he's doing. Just sit back and enjoy !!

You could drive a truck through there. It's a weird philosophy (one of my pics from t-day)

A lot of it has to do with the play developing very quickly in the backfield, that just slowing down/bumping the interior and backside linemen should be enough to let the Q/A/B backs do their thing and let the OL move up to LB level.

At least thats a lot of what was done in HS when we ran similiar scheme... course we werent that good either so what do I know :).
