Tech Story on SI.com

My favorite quotes from the article:

there's also the ubiquitous criticism of his triple-option offense.
It's a relic of the 1970s and 80s.
It won't work against bigger, faster BCS teams.
You can't win with an unbalanced offense.
When Johnson hears that chatter he always has the same response: "I just laugh," he said. "It's comical."

While Gailey did it with a conventional -- and often sluggish -- pro-style offense, Johnson brings in a run-heavy scheme that's akin to taking Gailey's playbook and strapping a stick of dynamite to it.

Last season Navy had 14 touchdown drives of 25 yards or more, 11 TD drives of one minute or less and 23 of two minutes or less. The quick-strike capabilities -- and the fact that Navy ran nearly 19 times a game more than Georgia Tech in the Gailey era

Interesting... A run-oriented offense with quick-strike capability. Now, add Georgia Tech speed to the mix. Looooooooooooooooook out, brothers and sisters!

What I don't understand is why everyone harps on the triple option, as if it's the only play he's going to run. I highly doubt Coach Johnson's playbook is simply a front and back page.

He doesn't have a playbook.

I thought he didn't hand out a play book and encouraged the guys to basically write their own, in their own terms. If he does all this stuff from memory, then I am even more happy that we hired him.

The vibe I've gotten from some of my old friends at GSU is that CPJ can and will often call his plays without any kind of chart or playbook at hand. It seems that he can do just about anything he wants with this offense. I get the funny feeling that he is going to mix it up a lot now that he is in a major conference just to keep bigger, faster defenses off balance and bumbling all over themselves. Can the Fall get here any faster? GEEZ!!!

They do because the offense we'll run is different. People in general don't like different and are trying to belittle it out of fear.

There is no playbook, actually. He tells players to bring a notebook and write the plays down however they can best remember them. He's violently against down-and-distance charts too. Says they make the "NCAA Offense" vanilla.

He actually doesn't have a playbook. that's a fact. He runs basically 8 plays out of the same formation, and all 8 plays have at least 3 different ways to execute the play depending on the reads. If someone adjusts to his offensive attack, he will move vary his formation and move his players into position instead of changing the play to counter attack the adjustment.
