According to the rat's guide to TECH, 67% of TECH's undergraduate student body of 10,375 are in-state students from Georgia.
The argument that Buck cannot recruit Georgia because of Georgia's average SAT score is stupid and specious.
We will pay in the next 3-5 years for this mediocre staff's inability to recruit athletes in Georgia. 5 out of 6 of our two-deep linebackers are from Georgia and all 5 will be gone after next year.
Coach O'leary, Mac, O'Brien, Roof, Thompson and Kelly are responsible for this tremendous depth on this year's team that we have had to call upon due to the numerous injuries.
It is going to be extremely painful if we look up 3-5 years from now and this new mediocre staff has completely dropped the ball on recruiting and squandered the depth that O'leary left us by not replacing it...as it appears they are doing.
The last I read was that we are not in on ANY of the top 20 rated athletes in Georgia this year....that is a disgrace.
Food for thought.
That is my opinion and you are welcome to it.

Buck....O'Leary......3-5 years......Braine-dead.....? Doesn't this guy ever get any new material!!!!

FYI, the percentage on the entire student body doesn't have anything to do with the percentage of athletes being from Ga. Regular students come here cuz it's cheap in-state. Athletes don't have that burden to worry about. Every school in the country just about has a higher percentage of in-state students. What does that have to do with recruiting?

Also, it IS possible that athletes from other states are as good if not better than the ones from Ga. To simply assume that Tech is wasting in-state talent is just dumb.

Finally, look at why an athlete is rated so highly in publications. Because they want to sell the magazines and make $$$. It has nothing to do with how good a player actually is. I've seen an athletes' rating actually go from being out of the top 500 to in the top 10 because 1 school was interested in him...FSU. So the rating system is totally crap, if you ask me.

Finally, O'Leary left us. You need to realize this, and stop complaining about him being gone. Tech didn't fire him....he left. Kelley instantly started shying recruits away from Tech after O'Leary was gone.

clubbe...forrest clubbe,
As usual, you totally miss the point. The argument has been made on here that BUCK cannot recruit Georgia because of average SAT scores.
That is a stupid argument and has been proven wrong.

i think you have missed the point. General student body scores have NOTHING to do with athlete scores. Smart kids in Ga come here because it's cheap and they get a good degree. Period. Again, what does this have to do with athletes?

clubbe...forrest clubbe,
One last try. There are plenty of students in the Georgia that make good SAT scores. There are plenty of athletes in Georgia that make good SAT scores. We have a ton of Georgia athletes on this football team NOW...because we USED TO HAVE a great recruiting staff.
To say now that we have BUCK that we suddenly cannot recruit Georgia due to average SAT scores, is completely LUDICROUS.

Wow...that name calling again. I have a different opinion and get bashed. Good thing this isn't the Hive, right BW? Hypocrite.

And by the way, calling you a hypocrite isn't a bash...it's a fact. Someone who says one thing then does another is a hypocrite. You do that, so you are one.

OK Beeware.. you have made your point... again !

I for one am not worried about recruiting... at all !!

I think beeware's post is relevant because everyone is using academics to justify our lack of success in GA so far. No one can prove or disprove that GA atheletes have higher/lower SAT scores. However, many have tried to use the misleading last place average SAT scores for GA as proof that GA atheletes don't do as well. My question is how can we admit close to 7000 students from GA but we can't recruit 10 - 15 football players from GA. Gailey's is making a big mistake by giving up GA in my opinion.

Is the average SAT for the Georgia High School athletes lower than the average High School student ?

Good points. I just counted over 50 Georgia athletes on our current football roster. To make the lame excuse that we suddenly cannot recruit Georgia due to average SAT scores is a ruse to try and hide the real problem.

I never said the thread wasn't relevant. I just said the correlation between the average student body and athletes doesn't make sense. And it doesn't.

Now, for those who are really concerned, acording to TheInsiders.com, there are 51 Ga players interested in Tech(granted, some have already commited elsewhere, I just took raw numbers). If you're concerned about rankings, 7 of those are "4 star" recruits, and another dozen or so are "3 stars".

Also, of the "Top 100" in the nation, guess how many are from Ga? 3.

So please forgive me if I don't panic simply because we "don't recruit Ga players". We do. We are just going after other guys, too.

Here's a neat link for you. http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=140&p=9&c=4

Why do you people care where the kids come from?

ACE and Bridges are not from GA. Are they LESSOR players?

Are you people prejudice against the north or the other states?

CG can get 88 players from R.I. for all I care if they can play and are students that should be all that matters.

Our headcoach use to be the head coach of Dallas Cowboys. CG probably has some pull in Texas which is why Bridges is here.

This is the BIGGEST NON-ISSUE I have yet to see posted. Next are you people going to demand that these kids be born under a certain astrological sign?

This is just a stupid issue. We are in Atlanta and IF WE WIN we will get our share of kids from the south.

Who said that Chan cannot recruit in Georgia? This is a non-issue that has floated up out of Beeware's nonsense.

Maybe i'm out of the loop or just plain ignorant...

But...just who or what is this BUCK??

GTFlunkout, unfortunately it's an underlying put-down to Coach Gailey. That's what a poster here calls the GT Head Football Coach. It's somewhat taken off as a joke to some posters. I don't think putting down our Head Football Coach is a joke though. I find it disrespectful. That's my opinion. If some people don't like my opinion and think I need to take medication, that's fine with me.

GOO JACKETS!!

man .. reading beeware's posts makes me mad

beeware, your recruiting concerns have already been documented .. along with all the other concerns that you have with the tech football program. you don't have to bring them up again.

i trust Chan Gailey has more sense than you do. Also, it seems that someone from the heralded Seattle bowl staff, namely Bill O'Brien, is still with us. i'm sure O'Brien will help in recruiting too.

you have very explicitly said and i quote that "Tech will pay for Braine's folly in 2-3 years". till then you have suggested that tech will keep winning inspite of our new coaches and not because of them. you suggest that they will do that by riding on the talent recruited by O'Leary and gang.

now why don't you do us all a favor .. and leave for 2-3 years. you can return after 2-3 years and we can then discuss the effects of Chan Gailey's hiring on MA TECH's football program.

all in favor for beeware to leave for 2-3 years say aye with me

AYE

I be with BW on this one. It will be a big disappointment if GT does not maintain ~50% of its roster from the home state.
