I've been bizzy, but I wanted to get this in before the Duke contest.

If anyone did not study the game but just read the internet boards, they would think that we just drooled through the game like the Upper Class Twits from the Old Monty Python skit.

That's not what I saw. For the most, we played well. For the most, so did UNC.

Football fans, at least the foolish ones, tend to think that opponents play a constant level game, while the team they follow goes up and down. They post things like UNC was blown out by so-and-so, but we only beat them by seven! They also analyze the play of their team as if their team was the only one that had any control of their destiny.

Well, in the game I saw, UNC had a lot of control over their destiny, for better and for worse.

Their defense played better than ours. Their front six did a great job of containing the run for most of the game and applying quick pressure. Only having six in the box allowed them to do a great job against the pass. Choice got his yards, but couldn't break their back. Grant still lacks strength to be a dominant ACC runner. I only noticed Ball try what was probably a planned run once, and that went in the books as a sack.

Their offense moved the ball consistently, but not quickly. Then they huddled and said, "Let's run the self-destruct play!" When Dailey decided to throw interceptions, there was no doubt about the outcome. No UNC player close. Our defensive back saying, "What is this doing here?"

Meanwhile, Reggie threw the ball a lot better than the stats show. Too many for my comfort were thrown away because of a very good UNC pass rush was on top of him quickly. These were actually good plays by Reggie. Others misses were long balls, which are low percentage anyway, which were pretty well thrown but not perfectly. (I read Kirwan who wrote that they only complete 23% of the long passes in the pros.) You can criticize Reggie for not checking down, but just spouting his attempt-complete numbers is just ignorant.

Special teams had a redemption game, for the most. Punting was typically excellent, and made it a workable field position game for us.

UNC has some exceptional athletes all over the place. Alas for them they were as undisciplined as NCSU is stereotyped as being, and they had no clue how to win. They played outstanding series, and then the wheels would fall off.

As far as how we could improve, I'd like to see in our next big game
a. Less mistakes on the offensive line.
b. Better progressions from our quarterback.
c. More varied run calls, which in our case means Reggie running more.
d. Better focus on defense while still in the middle of the field. We didn't pitch a shutout; UNC just didn't score, and there's a difference.
e. Stronger interior line play on defense.

Good post - UNCs Oline played a whale of a game. Our "blitzing" defense can look rather pedestrian when we run up against an Oline that's play well (UVA before this year, Clemson this year, I'm sure there are other examples). But we made it happen in the redzone and kept UNC scoreless on a day when the D wasn't playing its best.

We simply lacked the will to do any better than eek out a W against a team whose only win this year was against the Men of Fur - 1AA! Quite impressive.

I'll bet you're a real joy to be around longfordodd. "simply lacked the will"? Stupid statement. But that's about par for you normal level of discussion.

UNC has not been 'up and down' they have been consistantly bad to horrible. NC State by contrast has not been consistant but they have played well at times and beaten some good teams.

UNC has been bad to horrible for the entire season and I think you assessment that they suddenly played a good game is foolish to use your term.

The teams don't play in a vacume, is it good UNC d-line play and schemes or poor play and schemes on our part?

UNC's defense was giving up and average of 34 PPG through 9 games against a variety of competetion. Based on that, the safe assumptions that is was us that did not perform rather than UNC defense stepping up.

That's what I am saying, and it is based on observation, not guesswork.

And for the record, UNC lost to us by 7, lost to Wake by 7, lost to Rutgers by 5, and played ND roughly even in the second half. That is not "consistantly (sic) bad to horrible." Do you care to stand by your mischaracterization?

EDIT: PS. The record of those 4 teams that UNC played tough for all or half the game is 33-4.

Yes, I stand by my assessment that UNC has been bad to horrible. They've lost every single game that they have played this year against div 1a competetion an by and avg margin of defeat of around 18 points. They've played bad enough to get their coach fired in the middle of the season no less...

Their lowest they've held another team to is 21 point which was the first game of the seaon against Rutgers. Their lowest ACC total is 23 against UVA and they've given up 30 points or more (sometimes much more) 5 times this year.

Again, don't really see how you can look at the game and see how it was really them playing well on D versus us not executing. They beat our offensive line at times and Reggie was inacurate and we were unable to run the ball consistantly. I saw sloppy, poor execution all over the place when we had the ball.

Bottom line to me at least is that we must execute better offensively and especially Reggie must execute better. We havn't been the same since he got hurt and we're gonna need better production to win in Athens or in JAX.

I Hope We Play Wake In The ACCCG,

and Rutgers in the Orange, since by your analysis they must be horrible as well. You have convinced me.

I'm just glad we don't have to play Virginia, VPI, or Miami, who all beat UNC by at least 20 points. We would not have a chance of winning against ANY of those teams.

Nonsense. No more than two per ticket for the Big Top.

Ah, i guess we are resorting to being a smart ass since you could not refute any of my points, nice...

By the way, what is your point?

In case it is not abundantly clear, my point is that UNC is NOT good team and certainly does NOT have anything close to a good defense. Our offensive performance against said defense was poor...

My Point?

My point is that UNC has been up and down, playing tough teams (including us) tough sometimes and playing other teams (like South Florida) not-so-tough. You contended that UNC play has been consistently bad. I used absurdity to show you that your position is absurd.

I reported BASED ON OBSERVATION how UNC played, and you had the absurd position that what happened on the field did not matter, since ON PAPER UNC was always horrible.

In my mind, you had no points, other than a craving to see the worst in Georgia Tech's performance, or at least the worst in the performance of some that are associated with Georgia Tech. Don't know which, and don't care.

UNC's front six played a helluva game, and that's what drove the whole contest the way it went. Your "insight" is that they did not play well against other teams, therefore they COULD NOT have played well against Georgia Tech. Again, an absurd, indefensible argument. When I pointed out that they played well against 4 teams with a combined record of 35-4, you say I am being a smart-ass.

So tell me how UNC is so horrible all the time, and are not up-and-down, when they have played THREE teams that might go to the BCS series to within a touchdown in each game?

Sorry to butt-in, but both of you are correct in your own way.
UNC has been awful this year, and UNC really wanted to beat us last Saturday.

The truth in this rests with 2 points: 1) UNC's football program has been terribly coached since John Bunting has been head coach.

2) UNC has some very good football players on their team.

Most people will say that the UNC players want to carry Bunting out with some glory.
My view though is that the underclassmen want to show something on film to Butch Davis for next year.

In reality, it is a combination of number 1 and 2 above, and my opinion that we thought we would roll over them with a base offense.

Bump to show another equally arrogant and almost as stupid thread by Techbert.
