I would heavily favor championships (conference and national) in my assessment.

Based on that I would put O'Leary, Alexander, and Ross all ahead of Coach Gailey at present.

Not worth arguing about, but Chan is clearly under Alexander at the moment. He might not have had the best overall w/l but he did win a national championship and took Tech to the rose bowl.

I would also put Ross above. O'Leary is arguable, but whatever. National championships tend to put away anything bad that was done before it, and the majority of any errors made after it.

Yeah, that's a good point.

Looks like someone's fishing for arguments.

Only thing I'll say is I'd definitely drop CG down a few notches until there are some end of season results. I'm not even looking for a championship necessarily. A top-ten finish would suffice, but I don't see us getting that unless we take the ACC championship.

Two consecutive years ending ranked at all would be nice. A top ten finish in there anywhere would be gravy.

You have to be nuts to put Bill Lewis ahead of Borleske & Finnegan.

I agree those with National Championships should be ahead of those with only conference championships who should be ahead of those with neither.

1. Dodd
2. Heisman
3. Alexander
4. Ross
5. O'Leary

If this year turns out like we hope, then I would tie Chan with GOL. GOL had 1998 and Chan may have 2006 and each had some trouble when they first started out here. Not to rehash old arguments, but Chan faced a lot of adversity his first couple of years here as did GOL.

Above Chan and GOL, I would say Alexander, Ross, Heisman and of course Dodd at the top. Alexander's career record actually doesn't look that great, but he's got the MNC so he gets pushed above all non-MNC coaches automatically.

No coach with a National Championship takes a back seat to a coach who has yet to break the double-digit win mark. I really like Chan and what he's doing but I don't think he's bumped Coach Alex just yet. Yet.

Top Five:
Dodd
Heisman
Alexander
Ross
O'Leary

Bottom of the list:
Bill Lewis

Hard to argue with that. I will say that Chan has had some pretty astounding wins against some pretty stiff competition compared to our other more recent coaches.

That said, he isn't better than Dodd, Heisman, Alexander, Ross or O'Leary. I agree with the person who said that if Chan has a great year this year he may be tied with O'Leary or maybe even surpass him.

Another way to rank them would be:

Borleske & Finnegan 1-0
John Heisman 7-4-1
Bobby Dodd 12-10
George O'Leary 3-4
Bill Alexander 7-10-3
Bobby Ross 2-3
Bud Carson 2-3
Pepper Rodgers 2-4
Bill Curry 2-5
Dr. John McKee 0-0-1
"Cow" Nalley 0-1
Mr. Collier 0-1
Bill Fulcher 0-2
Bill Lewis 0-3
Chan Gailey 0-4

Just looking at yearly records:

Heisman- National Championship (1917)
(A tie against UGA in '15 and Washington & Lee in '16 preventing 3 straight undefeated seasons)
12 straight winning seasons (1908-19)
16 straight .500 or better (1904-19)

Alexander- National Championship (1928)
6 straight winning seasons (1920-25)
8 straight .500 or better (1929-36)
Overall, 13 winning seasons, 9 losing seasons, 3 .500 seasons

Heisman and Alexander together-
18 straight winning seasons (1908-25)
22 straight .500 or better (1904-25)

Dodd- National Championship (1952)
(A tie against Duke in 1951 preventing a possible 2nd, although there were 4 undefeated teams that year, including Princeton)
6 straight winning seasons twice (1951-56 and 1961-66)
16 straight .500 or better (1951-66)

Carson
1 winning season (1970)

Rodgers
4 winning seasons (1974-75 & 77-78)

Curry
3 straight .500 or better (1984-86)

Ross- National Championship (1990)
3 straight winning seasons (1989-91)

O'Leary
5 straight winning seasons (1997-2001)
6 of 7 winning seasons (1995-2001)

Gailey
4 straight winning seasons (2002-2005)
Well on way to 5 straight winning seasons.

O'Leary and Gailey together-
9 straight winning seasons (1997-2005)
Well on way to 10 straight winning seasons.

And let's not forget the only undefeated head coach in all of the years of football on The Flats:

Mac McWhorter 1-0

You forgot:
No Coach 0-1

In other words we can truthfully say that at GT no coach has lost to UGa.

Also conference championships:

Heisman 3
1916 5-0-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Champions
1917 4-0-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Champions
1918 3-0-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Champions

Alexander 9
1920 5-0-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Co-Champions
1921 4-0-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Co-Champions
1922 4-0-0 Southern Conference Co-Champions
1927 6-0-1 Southern Conference Co-Champions
1928 7-0-0 Southern Conference Champions
1939 6-0-0 Southeastern Conference Co-Champions
1943 3-0-0 Southeastern Conference Champions
1944 4-0-0 Southeastern Conference Champions

Dodd 2
1951 7-0-0 Southeastern Conference Co-Champions
1952 6-0-0 Southeastern Conference Champions

Ross 1
1990 6-0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference Champions

O'Leary 1
1998 7-1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Champions

Considering the second half of the previous century forward as modern football, Bobby Ross is easily our no.2, and without an ounce of disrespect for Coach Dodd who I worship, Ross may well be our best ever. He has no biz whatsoever as 5 or 6 on any list.
