I hate to admit to ignorance, but in my case, it's hard to hide and too, I haven't learned much on my own about these stars.

I realize the more stars a recruit has, the better he is/ought to be in comparison with his peer recruits.

My problem is, since rivals and scout as well as many of the posters on this board, seem to base so much on stars, then:

1) what are the parameters used in deciding on how many stars a recruit should have?
2) who makes these decisions?
3) is this star system that they are using an exact science, or is it a vague idea as it appears to me?

Anybody that can shed a little light here would be much appreciated.

Well, my opinion is that it's an attempt by those in the business to rate/rank the thousands of kids who play football to give people a sense of who is better than who. It's not completely meaningless but it's also not a science. It's a combination of measureables, intangibles, what their tape looks like, who is recruiting them, what state they play in, what position the ranker thinks they may end up playing, and pretty much anything else that the ranker thinks has any meaning. Coaching staffs evaluate players their own way but sometimes use the systems to be sure they aren't missing anybody. As for your questions,

1) varies
2) groups of poeple submit their idea and each services assigns rankings
3) see above, but it's clearly not an exact science
