Trying to be honest and make an honest assessment of this discussion.
I have never been a great fan of O'leary, but was extremely confident in the ability of Friegden. I see no way to say, "what if", with either or both of O'Leary and Friegden at the controls of this years team. Both are gone by their own accord, so that part is history.
I will give my opinion of the alternate scenario of Mac being the head coach, O'Brien OC, and Roof DC, and all of last year's assistants remaining.
I don't think our offense would be any different, because I think O'Brien would have the same type of performance with Mac as head coach, thus no improvement in the offense.
I do think the defense would be better this year under Roof, because he would have an experienced defense back to work with, plus he could implement his own strategy without having to be saddled with O'Leary's defensive strategy. I have watched Duke on TV, and their defense seems to be aggressive and playing better under Roof.
The receivers seem to be out of sync with the quarterback this year as opposed to last year. They are also dropping more passes. Maybe Kelley would have made a difference in the passing game this year, maybe not.
After saying all of this, I would think we would have beaten Vanderbilt and Connecticutt, a toss-up with Clemson at their place. I still think we would have beaten a weak BYU, a weak North Carolina, and would have beaten Wake Forest at home.
We could possibly be 5-1 at this point under the old staff. It is conceivable, we could have beaten Clemson with a better defense under Roof. Even thought Braine made the best decision a person could make with the candidacy between Gailey and Mac, I will concede that our record may have been better at this point than with the present staff.
It is possible Gailey could become the better hire over the long run, but he will have to get on the ball and make some gutsy decisions, or this season will become a total loss with a bad influence on the upcoming recruiting season.
