the dedicated educators of Athens

As bad as our education system is here in Georgia, (Clarke County is setting no records either) they should be ashamed of themselves. If those teachers get PAID for that day with MY tax money, that is CRIMINAL.

I think the school system is wise to factor that in when they plan the calendar.
Wise? For a dumb@ss like you, maybe.

I guess they like to get down to Jacksonville good and early so they can have as much fun as possible prior to the game, because I doubt they have much fun afterwards most years.

Well, if they factor it in their calendar, the teachers won't get paid for it and it won't count towards the overall days of school. If they don't, everyone calls in sick, they cancel class, the teachers get paid to drive to Florida, and the kids lose one of their days of school. I'd say it's probably a good idea, if this is a recurring thing.

Let's hear it for quality high school education in Georgia!
:puke:Go Dawgs. And don't come back. :ugh:

Just find some Mexican with a birthday on the Friday before the game and kill two birds with one stone. The next Presidential/Governorship candidate who needs to pander to the Hispanic vote bad enough is going to give us one anyway.

I think a better idea would be to put the kids interests ahead of the teacher's interests and put a stop to it. But I understand its easier to just throw in the towell.

How many of you knuckleheads have never taken a sick day from work to do something you wanted to do? What's that ol' saying about glass houses and stones?

BTW, I'm a former teacher myself and I took PLENTY of days off to travel to GT games. Are you gonna slam me for that?

(edit: my days off were actually called personal days. We were allowed 3 days per year that could be used for personal reasons in addition to sick leave. I did use sickleave, however, at other times. We used to joke about it as "mental health days.")

The problem is when half of the teachers in the school system are doing this, and are allowed to, well, just because. I wonder if the employees at Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary's can all take off for the game.

One thing to also remember is that the game wasn't being played on Friday..there is enough time to get to Jacksonville without so many teachers needing to take the day off that school is canceled altogether.

I assure you that in 32 years of working I have never called in sick to go to a ballgame or preballgame function. I always took vacation time if I left a day early. And out here in the real world (non-government jobs) we don't even get sick days.

Yeah, giving the kids a three-day weekend is really going to kill them. Especially if you make up for that day later in the year. And I'm sure none of those kids' families go to the game either, and none of them would appreciate it.
