The first FG attempt fiasco

On the first FG attempt, 47 yards, IIRC it was 3rd and 7 and we threw an incomplete pass. Then we lined up to go for it on 4th down prior to CPJ calling time out and electing to go FG.

At that time did anyone else think that, given the kicker situation, and given on that drive, and the prior drive, we were busting 4-5 yards per carry up the middle, that we should have considered running it and set up a potential 4th and 2-3 situation?

If the pass is caught then I'm obviously not posting this, but at the moment this is what we were discussing in my section -particularly after that horrid FG attempt ...only to be followed by a more horrid attempt at the end of regulation.

I mean, yeah, in retrospect we shouldn't have kicked anything other than extra points (hindsight being 20/20 and all). At the time I wasn't thrilled about a long field goal attempt after seeing the kick-offs up the at point. I have to think the kicker looks better in practice...

Was that setup by the Jeune drop? That's one about 10 plays that could have won the game (at least felt that at the time)

I wouldn't have been mad if we punted. The missed kick completely shifted momentum.

I thought that he was going to try a pooch punt there instead of kicking. The kicking in warm ups was spotty as you could see the kicks had low trajectories.

I would've passed again on 4th and 7, no doubt in my mind. We were converting 3rd and longs pretty easily either via pass or scramble. I was honestly pretty shocked that CPJ went for the FG.

100% agree with you. Said it to my son at the time. Don't put an un-tested backup kicker out there in that situation. If it's 4th and 7 from the 10 then maybe. Give him an easy chip shot for some confidence. The way we were running the ball and the way our defense was playing at the time, I wouldn't have minded turning it over if we don't convert 4th and 7. We were on what, the 30?

Also, if you don't think that first FG miss was in his head when he trotted out there for the 2nd, you're crazy.

And the chop block call

IIRC, it wasn't actually a chop block that was called. It was some sort of "illegal block below the waist," which I assumed was one of those arcane "downfield blocking toward the line of scrimmage" rules or whatever, given where the flag was thrown (in the Tennessee secondary).

You're correct. Given the performance of the officiating crew the rest of the game, odds are it was the incorrect call as well.

CPJ climbed over over #53 when that call was made. Pretty sure it was a good call or CPJ would have been on the refs instead.

when we're 4th and 5-10 I would basically always prefer running the football, especially when we're in "4 down territory."

On a positive note, CPJ must've had some confidence that he had a chance to make the kick, correct? So he must hit it better in practice.

Maybe a good week of practice and just 1 made FG will give him the confidence he needs to turn it around.

well, any of his PATs would have been fine from 36.

I said the same to guy next to me. I love CPJ, but that wasn't a good moment for him.

This... JJ doesn't fumble, Qua is in position for the last pass, we make one of two FGs, we play one of the two true NT that we have in the waning minutes of the game, Marshall pitches the ball to the following back on the 2 pt conv... There are a galaxy of opportunities to win, and we didn't grab one of them.
