The importance of recruiting was evident today...

I can remember several of the Clemson players had GT as their 2nd and 3rd choices when they signed with the Tigers. Losing those recruiting battles then is showing up now, as Clemson clearly had the more physical and more talented team on the field today. Not that Tech is chopped liver, but Clemson has now turned the corner on us in football. They will be fighting FSU and NCST for the conference marbles this year.
.
AND....if we don't have an excellent recruiting year this winter, prepare for the patented GT roller coaster ride to start out of the station again. 8 - 4 this year is still my guess... but next year, without great recruiting, we could be 5 - 6 or worse.
.
Bottom line.... If you are going to lose sleep tonight contemplating GT football, don't worry about the Clemson loss....worry about recruiting.

A high-five to you, sir!! That has been bothering me today, too, especially since the debacle last yr. with CG being late, and with his comments this yr. about recruiting. For some reason, I hope it's all in my mind, but he seems to be sort of passive, laid back. Hope I'm wrong.

You r right about recruiting being critical-GO said it is the lifeblood of your system and if CG does not yet realize that and we have another off yr., we are doomed. We could well drop down with Wake and Duke if recruiting does not keep up with the others. Look how well UVA has done the last couple of yrs. They will be a very, very good team this time next yr, if not now. Groh did a great job of recruiting his lst yr!!

I hope I am so wrong about CG, but there is something about his "everything is rosy" personality that scares me with regards to football!

Listen, I don't know if CG can recruit or not, and don't know for sure what he means by recruiting not being a problem. But to wonder if any college HC doesn't understand that recruiting is the lifeblood of a program is just dumb. He may not be able to get it done, but he knows how important it is. Even Franks at Duke understands that.

Good points....I think 90% of all coaches do understand the importance of recruiting. Strangely enough, there are always exceptions.
.
At Tech, the coach should come in with the realization that recruiting here will be twice as hard as any other major football program. To have good classes, he will literally have to work at recruiting, invest in recruiting, and research recruiting leads twice as hard as everyone else on the schedule with a winning record. If the coach has become a little rusty at the game of recruiting, he should immediately recognize his problem, and put the right people in place to do the necessary job.
.
There is NO room for mistakes in recruiting. The worst thing that can happen to the coach is that he will get fired with a big buy-out settlement. But the program will have to suffer for a minimum of several seasons.
.
Coach Gailey, I will judge you by your recruiting results this winter. Time is wasting. Good luck, and get to work!

As stated in another post, go back over the past five years, other than last year, and look at the rankings for all the ACC schools by year. I feel sure you will find Tech outranking Clemson and most of the other ACC schools during this period.

We have the better athletes at this particular time. We were beaten by an inferior team in talent. We were the more talented team.

Ahso you are right about the rankings - especially regarding Clemson. NCSU may be an outlier due to all the transfers they have taken but I am not totally sure.

We sure have more "talent" on the Oline than Clemson does but I after looking at their Dlinemen I believe they may have more raw talent there.

Overall I agree with you we had more talent than Clemson but we sure didn't play like it. And for all of our academic boasting they played a lot smarter than we did too.

I guess I'm biased, but I'm not convinced Cu had the more talented and physical team. Many breaks went against us, and if we have just a couple break our way - we win.

Can you imagine if we had scored on the final drive instead of the interception. 99% of the posts on this game turn from negative to positive.

Questioning CG right now is outright stupid. If the man can win in the NFL, he will win at GT.

Nebraska lost yesterday. I wonder if they are ready for a coaching change? When Fulmer loses this year will UT need a new coach? Please.

Let's lighten up and look forward to BYU.

a reply to Bobby Dodd's Ghost:
"but next year, without great recruiting, we could be 5 - 6 or worse"

This winter's recruiting will have very little impact on the product we see on the field next season. True FR or R-FR don't typically make a huge impact on a team. We are actually pointing toward a peak next season with all of our key players returning and/or enough proven talent at 2nd string to step in (except at Safety). The point you brought up about Clemson out-athleting us is very valid. We need to play smarter.

for Bizzybee:
"I hope I am so wrong about CG, but there is something about his "everything is rosy" personality that scares me with regards to football! "

I liken Chan to a Bobby Bowden kind of "father figure". He is a nice man with a positive outlook. Weren't we all a little burned out with the drill sgt. who left us for ND? As far as Chan understanding recruiting, the only question he had for Dave Braine was "will I have enough $$ to recruit nationally?" This means plane tix for coaches to see games/make visits across the country. We have some advantages at Tech (great academics, city of Atlanta) and some disadvantages (actually making our football players get a real degree/go to tough classes). I think Chan understands the challenge completely, and has a great strategy to "go national" with our recruiting , while getting those players we can in-state who can actually read and write and go to class (consumer economics, the major of choice in Athens, what a joke).

for Ahso: I'm sure Clemson out-ranked us in recruiting last year, and pretty sure they out-ranked us the previous two years as well. (not that recruiting rankings are worth anything).

for Elvis: I agree 100%
