I think that you hit upon the point that most people were missing when the "guideline" rumor/info. was being brandied about over the last couple of months. The reality is that it sounds as if there will be a figure in place that is a minimum, w/anything below that figure requiring the coaching staff to undergo some diligence to see if the kid does have the necessary "character" to press on and make it here.

Further, the Pres. Clough wants to have a good, competitive athletics program and they realize that you cannot field a team of ivy league athlete SAT scores and expect to compete at the Div. 1 level.

Part of O'leary and his staff's recruiting acumen was in finding the borderline kids that could make it here. Let's hope that the current staff's recruiting methods will be similar, albeit more quiet than most folks were used to. Recruiting is picking up some steam; now, we need the on the field performance to improve as well.

I generally don't follow recruiting. Could someone on this board tell me what's going on with recruiting right now? I've heard off the cuff remarks that make it sound like we're not doing well.

What's the problem, if there is any?

Why do we need "guidelines" when the NCAA gives us the standards?

Unless we don't want to get the best athletes.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I think that's purely a defensive mechanism to keep us going after athletes that have a lower chance of flunking out. Let's face it. Tech is harder than most schools and we don't have a joke major to hide people in. This is really no different than what O'Leary did when he recruited. He was always looking for good character and people he thought could handle the Tech classload.

The key is that we can still let in people that don't meet the guidelines.

I think that overall, I'm not going to get too worried about this. At first, I thought they were talking about requirements and minimums. That's not the case.

Are just that..."Guidelines"...there can be exceptions. There is a difference between a guideline and a requirement.

I think we're getting riled up over nothing. The idea is to look for kids that meet the guidelines and then make exceptions for those that don't. As long as that's the case, I'm willing to live with the "guidelines".

Even during the GOL days, I think some of this was going on.

Here's another way to look at this: If we were going to have higher entrance requirements than the rest of the conference, I doubt if CG would have come here.

Now, let's just whip BYU.
