The new parking plan

I made this post on the Hive and am surprised that there hasn't been one started over here yet, so I thought I would. Here is my post from over there:

At first glance, I think maybe the GTAA was trying to plan ahead for the 2003 season and realized that with the nearly 33% increase in seats, that the true Tech fans (high $ donors) deserve reserved spots. ALOT has changed on campus since 1985, when we last had the ability to seat 55,000. There was MUCH more parking back when the stadium held 60,000. When we open vs Auburn in 2003, demand for parking will be through the roof.

Now, all that being said, here are my fears, which have been expressed by many:

I have always been upset that the GTAA advertizes MARTA as much as they do. How many college football fans want to ride MARTA to a game?? Very very few!! Why? Because football is an "event" that starts at the crack of dawn and goes long into the night. It's about hanging out with friends, cooking out, watching other games, throwing the football with your kids, all while you wait for "your" game. There are 6 special Saturdays each year, and folks schedule their life around these days. MARTA RUINS the college football expeience for most!! College football in th South does NOT involve mass transit. Period. And the GTAA does not get this!! I have been preaching for years that the movement on campus to eliminate parking and streets (to make it more pedestrian) was a HUGE mistake, especially for football. To appeal to "new" fans, you can't push MARTA and you can't push parking elimination. Good grief this is crazy. I have always felt that the GTAA has never had any idea how to market football, because they just don't get it. My buddies and I have always joked about the stupid MARTA ads, realizing that the AA doesn't get it. This parking plan is further proof. So, my fear here is that the AA will try what the Falcons did (and failed miserably with): Ride MARTA, it's SMARTA. Yeah, worked well for them, eh?

The thought of lots sitting empty is NUTS!! What are they thinking??

What's this 4 hours before kick-off rule? This truly proves that the GTAA has NO idea what it is all about? It's not a Polo match, it's Saturday football in the South!! Can you imagine UGA not allowing folks to park 4 hours before the game? Ha ha ha ha ha ha No wonder we can't get fans outside Atlanta to come to games with ideas like this.

Does the parking pass really appeal to anyone here since you do not know what lot you'll be in, if your buddies will be in the same lot, or that you can't be in the lot more than 4 hours before game time?

Maybe we should all just not buy any and then the whole plan will go away!!

Thoughts??

ARRGGHHHHHH!!

If I remember correctly from my student days...
The time limit was an idea first broached by
Dean of Students Gail DiSabatino.
It has very little to do with the Ath. Assoc. and more to do with GT SMART-Students Managing Alcohol Risk at Tech.
The idea of the entire program was to move college life away from drinking and the biggest drinking that happens in college is for football games.
Why do they want to affect fans/alumni, because they're role models. Little froshlings/sophomores see alums/fans drinking to their hearts content and think that's what they're supposed to do in college.
The AA is more than likely merely the messenger.

I'm a 20 year GT Football season ticket holder, and donate to the A-T Fund. I donate less than $500.00 a year, though. Is this the Alexander and Dodd level of donation mentioned in the letter from GTAA. Does this mean I cannot buy a $35.00 parking pass for the Student Center Deck where I've always parked for years and years?

My two cents worth is that the GTAA has been very consistent with their Braine-dead decisions...whether it be parking, coaching, tailgaiting, dome games, ticket office... whatever.
