Needs to be able to:
1. Retain our top coaches (baseball, swimming, basketball (men's and women's), et al.
2. Continue improving student graduation rates.
3. FUNDRAISING FUNDRAISING FUNDRAISING
4. Hire someone to transform GT marketing.

Any other thoughts?

Long Shot but a great guy. Joel Nielsen, University of South Dakota AD. Did a great job as asst AD at Wake Forest(a lot of marketing in his position). Became AD at Colorado College, had success there (went to Frozen Four). Has done a super job at South Dakota. Had experience in ACC. Not a Tech guy but a rising star. We took a chance on one in Cremins. Love to see the powers that be consider this guy.

He must absolutely be able to sell the concept of: Recruiting more, as in lots more, Daryl Smith's, Joe Hamilton's, and Kelly Campbell's, and demonstrate their ability to survive academically through absolutely top notch beyond norm SUPPORT.

Let's face it, without success in football the new AD won't make it.

Let's hope whoever he (or she) is they ask the right questions of Clough and get the right answers. We should be spending more per SA than any school in the country on academic support. We need to get some energy and enthusiasm in the AA and use our differencs as advantages. I think that if you talk up the challenge and the outcome...the best support in the nation towards earning one of the best degrees, playing in ATL, in one of the toughest leagues in the country we're bound to find the right kind of kid. Do it like Curry and Pepper used to. Throw down the calculus book and say "the other coaches in here don't think you can do the work, we believe you can". If a kid is afraid of the challenge we don't need him anyway. But for those who are up to it, we need to give them all the support they need.

I've been lurking over on the Hive and have seen debate about whether Bill Curry should be considered a serious candidate. Some say that his years as a broadcaster, his years of head coaching experience, and the fact that he played ball here don't necessarily qualify him to be the AD. IIRC there is one person, who has already followed that career path and is considered one of the top ADs in the country. He played at Tech, became a head coach, did a stint as a broadcater, and then became the AD at Arkansas (Frank Broyles). Whoever does become the new AD (and I'm not necessarily pushing Curry) I would hope that they set the bar high and expect nothing but the best. They should let anyone that they hire know that Tech's aspirations are CHAMPIONSHIPS, and that they will be expected to bring a CHAMPIONSHIP ATTITUDE to work with them every day.

IMO if you look at Curry

I know he can handle the PR and outside connections part of the job. With the exception of some big money donors who are still pissed at him for the Alabama excursion.

I believe he has the ability to work with Clough to represent the AA. But that assumes that anyone can do that and that Clough will work with the AA.

I do not have any knowledge of his administrative skills. Could be good - could suck. That is the area IMO that is problematic.

Whether he is the right candidate then depends on

1) Your view of whether the Alabama excursion disqualifies him

2) Your view of what is important in the AD

3) Whether you think having a distinguished Tech Man will allow him to interact with Clough better.

All in all, I think he is more than acceptable but others should be looked at as well.

I do hope Dave gets better as I have heard that is a terrible and painful disease.

Now, my thoughts to the next AD. I will say this as I have spoken to several prominant Alums the last few days and the concensus is WE BETTER GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME! if not we will be sorry. Whoever it may be the guidelines should be what has been listed from the first poster here. This is our chance to right the wrongs that have happened recently.

I have also been asked by these individuals about a coaching change and I gave my thoughts to what should happen. 1. a OC 2. a ST's coach 3. a recruiting coordinator. If these changes aren't made then changes at the top should be.

I haven't said much after the debacle from the bowl but i did make a comment about being not supporting our coach without these changes. I will not bash him but I feel at this time he is not the person to lead our team.

Some have asked why it took so long, I am a realist but I feel the bowl game was the final straw.

With that being said, we need to close with a strong recruiting class and make the changes that need to be made and if it isn't done then take appropriate actions immediately.

There are a lot of unhappey Techsters out there and we need that to change. Hopefully these things will happen, if not then it will be a long spring and summer.

JD,
I'm glad to hear your input on this, as I was hoping to see something from you or your brother. Now, are you keeping your ear to the ground on who will be stepping in? Sounds like Coach Curry may have an interest here after all. Whatcha think?

Having known coach Curry for many years I believe that he has all of the qualities that we would want and need for an AD at Tech. Although interviews certainly need to be held, I believe that he will stand out as the best candidate.

Refrig, that bowl game knocked me off the Chan wagon too. I will support my head coach and Georgia Tech whoever the higher ups pick or continue to keep, but I'm not defending Chan anymore. Too bad, because I like him and I do believe he was handed a deck of cards missing a whole suit. But he has flaws in his game that I now believe are not changeable.

I think if he gave up the Offense as much as he gives up the defense then he could be a fine head coach, organizer, manager in the mold of the great majority of head coaches out there.
