Here's a terrific article on why the football playing youngsters want to go to any Bowl, & the farther away, the better....The coaches & AD staff are also part of this (125 packages in all).
As always, it's about the money, gifts, etc. Interesting.

Bowl game payout for players.

I also read a CCG article where he said another benefit of a bowl is not only the extra practice, but it allows recruits to come see a practice with their parents. He said it's a powerful tool in the process for a kid to see how a college practice is run and what to expect - and that the parents love it too.

According to rivals:

• 7-inch portable DVD player
• Fossil watch
• Personalized football
• Commemorative football and hat

I don't see it as being that big of a gift or anything inappropriate at all, a few commemorative things and a dvd player for the flight back.

Well, the Fossil watch is worth anywhere from $25-200 and the portable DVD player is worth at least $120...not too bad.

The real reason players want a bowl far away:

qoute:

" Players also receive mileage money to the bowl game and per diem money from the university."

I have heard the players can drive 2, 3, or 4 in one car to the bowl but each player still gets full mileage per diem.

Don't know if Tech allows the players to drive to the West Coast or not. I kindda doubt it.

That's why the two best games for the Tech players would be the Cotton or Orange. Probly the most mileage but still within driving distance.

honestly I doubt that mileage and gifts are really on the players minds when they're talking about which bowls they might get a chance to play in. Its a nice bonus, but a bowl game is about a lot more than that to them, its more about getting to play in a new venue, national exposure to nfl scouts, a fun trip, etc.

If they have the oppertunity for a roadtrip with their buddies and it works out so they get some cash to spend at the bars in the city they go to, let the kids have fun, wouldn't you do the same thing? I think far too much is being read into these gifts and such. They're college kids getting a (comparatively) very small reward for all that they do.

Here\'s the list

of what each Bowl is giving as gift packs to the participating teams. Remember that the Bowls give 125 each of these gift packs so that the players, entire coaching staff & some Athletic Dept officials receive the free gifts. Fun read:
