Per the AJC: "This game was scheduled when Chan Gailey, a friend of Crowe's, was Tech's coach."

Someone had asked a couple of days ago, so there's your answer.

WOO

I'm sure that had something to do with it.

But, it beats the heck out of opening against a ranked team on the road. Plus, the Thursday thing gives us a few extra days to iron out the wrinkles before heading to Massachusetts for the payback game.

At first, I wasn't too thrilled with playing Jax but at this point, I'm very happy about it. We need a game where a couple mistakes won't kill us.

What is the big deal. We are going to play one 1-AA or whatever its called now each year for scheduling reasons (read extra home game). They are as good as any. The problem this year is Army dropped out and we can only count one 1-AA game toward bowl eligibility

When I first saw our schedule, I was rather "Eh" about it, but now, I don't think it could have set up better. I mean, look:

Jacksonville State - W
Boston College - W
Virginia Tech - L
Mississippi State - W
Duke - W
Gardner-Webb - W

Just to be fair and give us a loss against Virginia Tech (Who I think we will have a good chance to beat) we go into the Clemson game and the second half of the season 5-1.

If we go 5-1 in our first six games, I think that we have most of our wrinkles for this season ironed out and we're going to have a damn good shot at finished strong. If you presume we lose to Clemson (Again, just out of fairness) the other games are all toss ups, our most difficult being North Carolina (You could make the argument for Florida State because of their defense) which I also believe we can win.

Our schedule is absolutely perfect for easing into a new offense this season.

Didn't say that it was a big deal, broseph. Someone asked, so I answered.

The problem this year is Army dropped out ...
That really bummed me out. I was going to go to that game with some buddies who are in the Army. I was looking forward to taking in West Point.

I bet the guys at Army are still patting themselves on the back for cancelling considering we hired Johnson shortly thereafter.

All I ask, is that CPJ do for us in the first year what he did for Navy. Just double the number of wins. If he can do that, I will be satisfied.

My wife's uncle played for Army. We were going to have a huge block up there and make a fall road trip out of it.

We need to count our lucky stars if we get out of this stretch with 2 wins. 1 is much more realistic, and 0 is possible.

We will probably have 2 losses going into the Clemson game.

Boston College is garbage and I expect us to be playing pretty decently by the time we play Mississippi State.

Don't forget these facts about Mrs. Sippy State:

Despite a solid '07 season, they were total garbage on offense. What O they did have came from their backfield Our strength (at this point) is up front on offense.

Their strength was on defense, and DC Ellis Johnson bailed for South Carolina.

The boys from Starkvegas will put up a good fight, but I expect us to control this game.

BC took us to the WOODSHED last year when we had a senior laden team and they had a new coach. You don't go from that to garbage in 1 year.

Now UVA ... they're garbage.

If we don't fumble all game tonight and score 40, I'm on the One-Loss-Before-Clemson bandwagon. Otherwise I'm on the Brace-Yourself-For-Two bandwagon.

They took us behind the woodshed with a white-hot quarterback that picked apart a defense that had be primed to get ripped to shreds by a decent QB - plus they had a good rushing attack to balance things. Both of those things are gone. I think Boston College is a bad team this year and I think beating them will be good for some early confidence.

And yes, UVA is garbage and we'll trounce them.

I think BC has the best D in the ACC. We'll find out. That's why we play the games.

That's their saving grace is that they have a good defense. But I'm counting on us being better than expected and busting loose in New England.

yes, you can. when you lose your offense, like the one guy that made it run, and other key pieces, then you can go from good to not good pretty quick.

one of their supposed strenghts, their D-line, is not well suited to a spread attack, being big and heavy without proven mobility.

so, i think we have an excellent chance to beat BC. i also expect us to beat MSU, although they could prove difficult.

we SHOULD be 5-1 going to Clemson, if its less, then we underachieved, IMO

Welcome to Tech, Paul Johnson! The honeymoon period officially ended with this post.

And with that, I make my way to the stadium. Go Jackets!!!

I really hope nobody is sitting directly next to gth tonight. He's pissed about something and I expect some form of aggravated assault to be the result.

Yes you are, and that's a shakey thing to count on.

If we don't fumble tonight, then yeah, count on it. Somehow I don't see that happening.

We only know like 10 plays and don't know how to run those well yet, guys. Your expectations are through the roof.

Next year? Sure. But the first 6 games of this year are going to be like practice scrimmages, and 2 of those 6 are vs defensive lines ranked in the top ten NATIONWIDE. And DLs are the thing that kills the 3O more than anything else. And we're facing those 2 in a row, immediately after J State.

If we can go 3-1 in our first 4 games, THANK THE HEAVENS because it's entirely unlikely.

i have said from the beginning that we should be able to replicate a 7-win season. to do that, we should be 5-1 going into the Clemson game, otherwise we will have to pull an even bigger upset somewhere else

if the supposedly horrible staff of the past cant get 7 wins every year through thick and thin, with a more difficult schedule, then we should be able to do it here

scheme, schmeem, if someone cant learn it with the time that they have, then it is going to be a problem EVERY year. you cant count on always having a bunch of upper classmen in your system.

PJ will have time to get to 10-11 wins, but there is no excuse, IMO, to accept a 3, 4 or 5 win season as some are saying. SCREW THAT! we have too much talent for that. you dont let the system steal wins from you.
