ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A college student on spring break in Ponte Vedra Beach was arrested after he shot himself in the foot with a shotgun that, minutes earlier, he pulled on some beachgoers who reportedly insulted him.
Amar Yakhou, an 18-year-old student at the University of Georgia, told a deputy that a group of guys were harassing him and his girlfriend Tuesday because they were from Georgia.
They followed Yakhou to a parking lot, where he pulled out a shotgun from his 2005 Mazda to "scare them away," according to a police report.
Then he went to the beach to get his girlfriend and said they needed to go. As he was moving the gun from the back seat to the trunk, it went off, and he suffered a gunshot wound to one of his left toes.
Yakhou, from Milledgeville, faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was in the process of being released from the St. Johns County jail Wednesday on $3,000 bail.
