We're not very good.

Good football teams do not fumble punts with the game on the line.

Good football teams do not false start on 4th and inches with the game on the line.

Good football teams do not drop wide open, easy, busted coverage, 18 yard passes on 3rd and 20 with the game on the line.

Is that coaching? Maybe. It's not playcalling. Maybe it's discipline. Maybe it's character. Maybe it's recruiting? Everybody likes to bitch after losses about play calls, and I can't argue with too many from this game. What I can argue is that those three unforced, boneheaded, idiot things to do above, cost us the game, along with any number of other similar things that good teams simply don't do.

We do dumb things, therefore we are not a good team. Pretty simple.

Now, as far as how this impacts Chan, I think at this point he's in "Beat Georgia or Retire" mode, and I bet Radikovich tells him so tomorrow morning. I've always been a Chan supporter. Still am, sorta. But our football team, with all it's experience and talent, simply isn't very good.

Well, can't disagree with ya....

But I don't expect it to get any better under a different coach.

Neither do I, honestly. We've always had dumb player mistakes cost us games. I recall a very pungent one in umm, 98 I think vs NC State (?) where a guy blatantly dropped a wide open pass on 4th down for the win. And then of course there's the sea of Reggie related dumb plays.

The slight on Chan was not to say that we could get a better coach. I don't think we can, personally. I think the staff we have here is about as good as we're ever going to get. But if he doesn't beat UGA with this squad, after we squandered our other primary goal in our first two conference games, he will definitely be fired.

The common thread is that they were all mistakes by freshmen. Except the muffed punt (inexcusable, considering he's only back there because he's careful and has good hands).

I know the freshmen are all very talented but with a team as deep and experienced as GT, I can't believe it came down to so many mistakes by freshmen there at the end.

orly?

Which freshman was starting on the O line for the 4th and inches play after the 20 minute break?

beej67,
doomed to radio last weekend

Freshman DE Morgan was being used at TE because lack of deph and injuries.

Morgan jumped?

Damn. That stinks. And here I'd been thinking it was one of the veterans this whole time.

It's a little more understandable that he'd jump, since he usually doesn't go on a snapcount.

excuses again. A smart coach would have used another OT or OL that is seasoned on this down. Like lonowski, smith or howard. THAT is what a SMART coach does on the most critical down in a game. He doesn't put in a TRUE freshman WAY out of position....
