I know I promised this over a month ago but have been extremely busy with spring practice and getting finished up with the school year. I attended the GT coaches’ clinic on April 15th and boy am I glad that I did. Since it has been such a long time I do not remember school names, but there were probably 40 or so schools represented, some names I recognized while others I did not, but I have never kept up with GA HS football so please don't hold this against me.

The day started with all the HS coaches meeting in the conference room at the stadium where there were a few dozen computers set up for players to use. There were a handful of players with their jerseys on in the computer room while we were waiting for the days activities to begin. Around 2pm or so an older gentleman came in to get us and took us first to the locker room and let me say, HOLY CRAP! that thing is awesome! From there we walked under the away stands down to the locker room where the S&C coach showed us around, showed us different equipment they use and such. We then went to the far side of the weight room where he showed us a PPT presentation on what their normal off-season workout regimen consisted of. I'll have to say, Chris Reis is bigger in person that he ever appears on TV because almost every slide was of Chris doing the exercise. The presentation in the weight room lasted about 45 minutes or so, then the S&C coach answered questions before leading us down the home sideline and on out to the practice fields. The only players in the weight room at the time were the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The only players I recognized were Dickey and Smith, man these beasts make me feel like a little kid when standing next to them.

Once out on the practice fields, we beat most of the players and coaches out there, we stood around waiting on practice to start. While standing there with a co-worker Coach Gailey walks up to talk to us. He walks up, sticks out his hand, and introduces himself. First impression was great, he was very personable, outgoing, and made sure that we were being taken care of. He stood there every bit of five minutes talking to us one on one being very personable the entire time. By the time he walked off all of the players were out on the field ready to begin stretching. The S&C coach, sorry but I have forgotten his name, led the team through calisthenics prior to practice starting. Once practice officially started the visiting HS coaches were invited out onto the fields and told it was OK for us to go with the group we were most interested in learning from. I walked over with the o-line and coach D for the entire individual period. Once individuals broke we rejoined the rest of the team over on the main fields for the remainder of practice. There’s no need for me to re-hash practice tidbits as all of that has been gone through before.

Once practice was over we were escorted to the stadium where we were taken to the letter winner’s club lounge for meal and drinks. During the meal they were showing the Auburn game as well as the Miami games from last year on the televisions in the lounge and the Miami game on the jumbo-tron in the stadium. This is when the BS sessions started, groups of mostly more seasoned than I HS coaches all sitting around after a day of football, now mostly sipping on Bud-Light the stories started. After probably an hour of meal and chit chat the entire GT staff joined us in the lounge where Coach Gailey spoke and introduced his staff. After his speech and introductions the position coaches were dismissed and took with them the HS coaches for film and Q/A sessions. At this time is when I left but Coach Gailey kept re-iterating the fact that he and his staff would stick around as long as we were there and to not worry about the time.

This was my first visit to Tech not in a recruit role or in a fan role. I must say that I was seriously wowed by the way the red carpet was rolled out for us. This was in no way a money making day for GT as the registration fee was only $10 and from what I ate and how I saw others eating probably did not even cover the cost of the meal and drinks. I felt honored to be there on this early April day and look forward to going back for many more years. The highlight of the day for me was two-fold. First being I got to meet and talk to Coach Gailey, the second being I got to reunite with one of my former HS coaches in Coach Jeep Hunter. Coach Hunter was my HS defensive coordinator for my first three years in HS before leaving us to join the college ranks. Guys, he has not changed and I feel he is going to turn out to be a great hire! Feel free Stateline or anyone else to fire questions if you have any.

LB Coach: I knew you hadn't forgotton me! Great report....though I wish you did remember a sample of the Georgia coaches and schools there. Reason? Because of the input they have within their schools, their communities..... and the impact they on their possible college recruits....i.e. the possibilities for them and Tech football, Tech academics.....and the necessity of GRADES, GRADES, GRADES! I hope the cream of the crop of Georgia football was in attendance.

Sounds like you had a great, great time. It makes me fell like I was left out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

What was your impression of Jamaal Evans....the kid running back? What was your impression of Pat Nix? Special teams? Was any other S. Carolina schools there? Florida?

Thanks for your time! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rockon.gif

I do know there were coaches from Alabama there. We have been doing a good job in that state lately.

My impression of Jamaal Evans was WOW! This kid is going to be a stud if nothing detrimental happens. It was amazing, he would fly into the line, disappear, then re-appear 10-15 yards down field past everyone. One play in particular I saw Evans outrun Kenny Smith to the corner when Smith had a great angle on him and he still got beat. My impression of Coach Nix is I like his style of coaching. Without ever noticing his style before we are alot alike. I like to get in a kids ear when they mess up where only they can hear me, and praise them loudly in front of others when they do well. It appeared the QB's respected him and listened to what he had to say. Special teams I did not get to see alot of, except for punt team. On punt team, I did not like what I saw, I hope it was just a spring experiment and will not take hold in the spring, if it does take hold and stick, I will be praying we do not have to punt much. It was not the players on the field that have me worried it was the formation. I only saw one other SC school there and that was Sumter. I mainly only saw the three or four letter initials of the school on the coaches shirts so I do not know exactly was there. The main school I remember, I do not remember the name but I remember the school colors were that of U of Miami, the orange and green. There was one more I remember, BHS, and their colors were blue and white. Hope this helps.

LB Coach: Orange and Green? Thats probably a newer school as I can't think of who it might be. BHS isn't Buford High School(school of Darius Walker) since there colors are Gold and Green. Maybe it's Bainbridge or Benedictine.

I think you are speaking of Kenny Scott as to who Jamaal Evans whipped going to the corner. And Scott is suppose to be FAST!

Hopefully Nix will shine this year as a coach. Ditto the special teams though your observation of the punting does worry me.

I think his observation of the punt team was a bit overstated. He may have been referring to the blocking formation we used. Our punter for the coming season has a stronger leg than last years punter and the people we use on special teams won't be decided until this fall when the new class is practicing.

Correct Panther, it's all formation, the punter will be fine if he can get the punt off.

We may be experimenting with different formations because this year's punter takes an extra step or two before kicking than Ben Arnt did. Just a guess.

If we can protect him, we should be fine in the punting game. This guy can really boot it.

Please just don't run that crazy formation Syracuse used against us in the bowl game. That had to be the dumbest thing I've ever seen. The only reason we only blocked one punt is because we only tried to block one.

Although Arnt didn't have the strongest leg in the world, the problem with our punting game last year was coverage, not the punter. It don't matter if ya kick it 30 or 60 yards, if they run it back for 30, that's bad special teams play. Hopefully now that Wilson is gone, gone, gone ST will be a strength again.

In fact Arnt was downright deadly at nailing it inside the 10 - that's as important as distance in the overall scheme of things.

I agree if you nail the other team inside the 20 or better yet inside the 10, let the d sit back and wait for a mistake then you are in business.

LB Coach: A question I forgot to ask you yesterday....Did Jon Tenuta yell at you? I hear he yells at everybody. These days I'd consider it a badge of honor./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

Unfortunately, he did not yell at me, but you are right he yells at everyone. I am now convinced he is the reason the defense plays so pissed off, not because of his plays or blitzes, but to keep from getting yelled at by CJT. I believe his favorite saying, at least the day I was there, was to tell the players to get their heads out of their ass. On one play a defender messed up, Coach yelled asking where was the players head, and the player just tapped hisself on the butt. Quite funny to see, I believe it even got a small smirk on Coach's face.

He usually picks a player that he likes and wants to help develop. Last year it was Joe Gaston. This years it seems to be Guyton.
