This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

1) I love GT, and I love GT football.

But..

2) Ted Roof, despite his sincere love for Georgia Tech, and his outstanding capabilities as a player was INEPT as a defensive coordinator, and did not fully utilize the talent that rigorous recruiting gave him! I salute his departure!!!

3) While I commend George Godsey for his courage, heart and desire to win; and while I am grateful for his service "bridging the gap" between the Joe Hamilton's, I (very much) LOOK FORWARD to a more athletic and capable quarterback! I salute George Godsey's departure!

4) I think as long as Ma Tech continues to envoke and impose its rediculous academic standards to athletes, we will never see anything close to the 1990 season. We need to lighten up, sign em' up, and let em' play!

I don't mind disagreements, but will this get me the ax?

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Ted Roof was very well qualified as DC, and did an admirable job in difficult circumstances. Calling the man inept is an outragous statement.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">We should be so lucky to have another QB as good as GG. He rewrote the record book AFTER Joe rewrote it. It's very likely we'll never see another QB as capable as GG on the flats. This is even more outrageous statement than TR being inept.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Tech's admission standards are no more rigerous than any other school's, other than not taking partial qualifiers. We didn't relax standards in '90, nor should we ever. Many, many schools with far less difficult courses of study would love to have GT's success at football. South Carolina is one good example close by. If you wanna just sign 'em and play 'em without reguard for academics, well there's a pro football team that plays just a few blocks down Techwood that probably fills the bill for you.

This kinda idiotic crap belongs on the dog vent. Not on a GT board. Go back to whatever SEC board you came from.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">1. Welcome GT_00....We all love GT and GT football.

2. Roof's defense held Syracuse, Maryland, Ugag, and the #1 offensive team in the nation and #9BCS Stanford Cardinal to ONE offensive TD each...hardly inept. Also, outplayed, and defeated, a supposedly better defense from North Carolina, on national tv, coached by Tenuta. The defenses' poor performance against Clemson was primarily due to Daryl Smith and Ather Brown getting hurt giving Dantzler room to run against a walk-on. Thanks TED...we will miss you.

3. Godsey gave a gutsy performance all year playing on one leg and was one of the toughest physically and one of the smartest mentally of all of Qb's in TECH history. Thanks GEORGE...we will miss you.

4. If I couldn't spell 'ridiculous', I don't think I would criticize TECH's academic standards. We should not lower academic standards.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

Wow, beeware, that was well said.

I disagree slightly w/#2 regarding UNC--UNC's defense was going up against a much better offense than the GT D was; nonetheless, we are forced to only speculate about the real Ted Roof. He and O'Brien claim that they called plays, schemes, etc., but the Seattle Bowl gave us a glimpse that that was not necessarily true. I wish Roof well @ Duke; however, I am looking forward to seeing what the new staff can do.

Folks, go easy on GT_00, he ain't watched a lot of football.

One thing we agree on....the Seattle Bowl, against the #10 offensive team and the #9 BCS Stanford Cardinal did show us what was possible, and what we ALREADY had.....until a BRAINE-Fart took it all away.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

We won't boot ya and you are entitled to your opinions but I don't think you made many friends on this board.

I disagree with all that you stated. Roof was the DC under a defensive coach. Everything he did was scrutinized. I think he did an outstanding job considering we have not had a dominating line in years!

Godsey may have been slow but that boy had more heart than 99% of all college football players. He will be sorely missed.

Academic standards... Tech has never been, is not now, and will never be a football factory. If you are looking for schools that take partial qualifiers, have courses like chair stacking and walking, then look no further than the SEC. UGA and UT fit the bill quite nicely.

By the welcome to the board.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

Welcome aboard. Of course you can vent, that's one of the main things these boards are for and our admins are very tolerant. Just don't make the same negative comments day in and day out, PLEASE.

You could not be more wrong about Godsey who proved once again that athleticism is not the sine qua non of great quaterbacks. Johnny Unitas, who was so slow he could barely get to the bathroom on time, is the first QB I remember who showed this.

Beeware is quite right, if you can't spell ridiculous....

I'm not as sold as these other guys on Roof and am glad to have a new DC. The 2001 Clemson game, even with Smith's injury, was a panicky fiasco. But he was a GREAT player.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

You have every right to your opinion but it seems to me that your expectations are way too high. I
think I understand why you were so harsh on Ted
but it so easy to criticise. Ted wasn't very effective as a DC but I'm not sure that any of us know the whole story. Obviously GOL thought he was
the real deal since he planned to take him with him to Notre Dumb. This was O'leary's dream job and it wouldn't make sense for him to retain a three legged dog. As for Goose Iwould respond that
he wasn't fleet afoot nor could he throw the classic tight spiral but he completed those ugly ducklings as well as retaining his cool under fire. For example theTD pass to Watkinswith eight seconds left to beat Clemson. This play wasn't the exception but the rule with this kid. I would characterize this kid as A WINNER.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

Everyone is entitited to their opinion GT_00.. but I also would disagree with your assessment...

In my opinion, Ted Roof did a good job during his tenure, and he will prove to be a very good coach in the future... I wish him the best, and hope that he returns "home" one day....

I dont necessarily salute Godseys departure... I do feel we were limited last year in regards to his physical abilities, but we will sorely miss his intelligence, leadership, and calmness under pressure. I agree that our offense was limited last year due to his injury, but the positives definately outweighed the negatives... if you will remember, the exact opposite was true with Hamilton... he possessed the physical skills... but early on and even for a while into his career, the coaching staff held their breath in terms of decision making...

I think we will see academic standards as a whole go up... even the new SEC Commissioner has stated as such this week... although football is important to me, I would much rather see us be average, and graduate above average student athletes...

Welcome to the board... and look forward to your input...

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

Welcome to the board GT_00. Your opinions will be respected but Ted imho was limited by GoL's meddling. Also, BoB had some of the same from GoL.

George Godsey was a winner in all aspects, on the field as well as in the classroom. In the words of Al Davis "Just win Baby" and George did this.

I want to see athletes graduate from GT. Hopefully we can do better at this in the future.

Welcome again.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

1) Beeware, you've explained the Clemson situation via the loss of Smith. I was at the game and agree with you. I thought Lawston did a better job than Etheridge, and wondered why he was suddenly benched??? FWIW, I later saw Etheridge look great against other teams. I ALSO thought a lot of the problem was Clemson's 6-4 220lb. receivers like Jackie Robinson and McKelvey blocking against our smaller backers like Key Fox and Wimbush. Early on in recruiting, we seem to be making an earlier effort at recruiting the bigger LB (Kory Gedin, Victor DeGrate, switching Chirod Williams to LB etc.). I'd have to assume Tenuta has pushed for this. HOWEVER, how would you explain the UVA debacle? I only heard it on radio and would be interested in some discussion on it. That was the nadir of our season last year. We should have beaten weirdo Groh and his Cava-queers all over the field.

2) As for Roof, I think time will continue to reveal that a lot of the problem was O'ControlFreak's insistence on vanilla defense. We had a team based on speed that was NEVER allowed to blitz or stunt until the Seattle Bowl, when, mysteriously, Roof was placed in charge of his own fate under Mac (BTW, Chan seems to share a similar philosophy to Mac in this regard). The result was a complete lack of pressure on the qb and a TOTAL placing of pressure on our CBs and LBs in coverage situations in which the opponent had 27 seconds to throw. This negated our speed advantage. O'Leary was SOOOOO dedicated to his conservative dogma that he couldn't see practicality.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

Don't blame the entire Clemson debacle on Etheridge. To be sure, the O lineman for Clemson were cleaning his clock but that was after releasing from the D line. Tech's D tackles were non-existant in that game allowing the big O lineman to paste the small middle LB.

The fact that Woody could dash into a very small seam did not hurt either. He was just too quick.

You also have to put some blame on the coaches for not recognizing the mismatch and doing something different. A five man front would have been a better matchup for the Woody draw play than the same ole same ole.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

Ramblinwise,

Giving up 5-7 yards may be the d-line's fault. Giving up 10-50 yards like we did against Clemson was about more than the initial push. I saw Key Fox get shamefully wiped out by a Clemson receiver downfield more than once. Travis Zachery smushed Etheridge, as I recall. A lot of uncalled holdings in that game too, in all fairness, but a linebacker ought to be able to break free from a wide receiver's jersey grabbing to at least DISRUPT a scrambling QB. The late bomb that put it into OT on 3rd and long was, once again, probably O'ControlFreak's fault. 3 man front in late, just like against Maryland. Young has been getting burnt all day by Dantzler's legs. He sees the scramble (after about 15 seconds in the pocket), instinctually breaks up, and gets burned by his arm this time.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

My take on your post.

First, you have as much right to your opinion as I have to my opinion.

The jury is still out on Roof. He was a good recruiter and the kids loved him. It is possible, he was weighted down with O'Leary's fatally flawed defensive scheme. I believe he is pretty much in charge of the defense at Duke. He does not have the caliber of players at Duke as he had at GT, but he does have a chance to use his own schemes.

George Godsey was a gamer. He was an unusually smart QB and performed above his physical abilities. He was a very good QB, but did have a liability in his senior year due to his previous injury. Yes, the team should be in better hands this year, because the two starting QBs are both good and healthy.

I am glad Tech is an academic school. Heisman, Alexander and Dodd did very well with the type of athletes that Tech receives. It only takes the right type of coach. I believe Gailey will win consistently at Tech with the same type of athletes we have been getting. Only time will tell.

Welcome to the board. One bit of advice, you only have to read BeeWare's post one time. It will always be the same message each time.

If I'm not mistaken, BYU was the nation's #1 offensive team with 44.1 ppg and 504.1 yds of total offense.

Re: This is my first post: I\'m want to test this website.... Can I vent?

Right you are, TJNGIRLZ. BYU led the nation in scoring offense and total offense.

2001 Offensive Stats

The Cardinal's stats.

Scoring Offense
9. Stanford 37.09 PPG

Total Offense
10. Stanford 451.55 YPG
