I'm just back to Baltimore and WIRED after driving 8 hours in heavy rain. A few thoughts to consider:
1) I was sitting in the opposite corner from the band so a lot of key plays happened right in front of me. Cooper Taylor's Pass Interference was as bogus as they come and the BC fans around me agreed.
2) And then also right in front of me was JWD's interception that was called a touchdown. He had position, had his hands in first, etc. The BC receiver made a great recovery to get his hands on the ball and held on, but there was no doubt in my mind that JWD's had the position first. I am curious about the replays on this one and the rules for "two players catching the ball at the same time". Is it automatic for the offense?
3) BC's Defensive Line just mauled us today. They are really really big and quick. Sorry to say, but Raji is the best DT I've seen this year. He's Dorsey good.
4) Having said that, our DL really took charge in the second half. BC played some flawless ball in teh first half but our defense always stood up and held them to FG's. But the second half, you could just tell that we were controlling the game just as BC's DL was controlling it during their play. This game was just two great warriors trying to outdo themselves. COngrats to both DL's.
5) Reid really looked good and gosh we are playing some young uns out there. I'm not sure who replaced Smith but our offense starting clicking a whole lot better. I didn't see Smith again but I did see him singing with the team after the game. I was impressed that he hung in there because as a leftover I thought he may just quit.
6) I think our kicking is going to be just fine. It was getting better and better as the game wore on and our coverage was good.
7) BC's stadium has a concourse below the field level. It's pretty cool to watch the last minute of the first half that low with BC coming right at you (looking out a portal right behind the goal post). I thought for sure, our D would finally break down and the game would be lost right there. But they held, and PJ called that timeout AND GOLLY IT WAS HOT/HUMID...the guy missed. Wow, Bobby Dodd all over again.
8) I'm sorry but y'all are missing the boat on JWD. He's a player.
9) The safety was also right in front of me. I thought it would get changed for forward progress, but really it was a BC lineman that gave his QB the final nudge back. The QB, tiptoed forward out of the endzone, but his linemen knocked him back. It wasn't a Tech player and I thought it had to stand.
10) Chestnut Hill is very pretty and the campus is outstanding. The BC fans were excellent, although I did get quite a few looks when I was screaming against the interference on Cooper Taylor. They are not quite into the game as we are.
But they are wonderful hosts and real great addition to the ACC. It's just too bad about lack of parking, etc. (There is one cubby hole of tailgating, partying, so it did have a college atmosphere.)
11) What is PJ trying to do when he puts Gardner at RT and Bebe at LT? Tackle eligible? That set up didn't work once and contributed to some weak side pressure. In fact, weak side pressure is a real problem for us right now. Either Josh needs to read something differently or our offense has to make an adjustment.
12) PJ is the next Dodd for Georgia Tech. His substituting is what won the game. We played a ton of different kids out there today and it showed at the end of the game. And he doesn't just throw a kid in for a play, he lets them participate for a quarter a full series or whatever. God this used to drive me crazy in the last many years. We'd never blow anybody out and get some playing time and we rarely worked in other players during the game. Things have really changed and I just think the players really like it. Save a couple maybe.
