This is an interesting recruiting chat with Tom Lemming. He only talks about the big-time programs, but his comments about Notre Dame are real interesting since we'll be hosting the Irish in '06. Too bad Notre Dame figured out the poor recruiting & canned Willingham after only his 3rd yr. Also, it's too bad they found a real fit for HC @ ND in Charlie Weis.

Willingham went 10-3 in his first year.

The "poor" recruits they had made up most of Notre Dame's offense and defense this year. Weis went 9-3 in his first year with a veteran team. Not too much different than Willingham - it appears.

Kinda early to be anointing Weis as their savoir, isn't it? Or is this a not so subtle shot at our program?

Willingham won with Davie's players and Weis won with Willingham's. Comparing the 2 HCs is an embarassment to Weis...Willingham has NEVER been successful(.500 record at Stanford does not a coach make). Weis is a proven success and actually has a system that works. You will not see him undercoach the nation's top talent like his predecessor...guaranteed!!!

OR, Willingham was trying to install a West Coast offense using Davie's players who weren't suited to it. He recruited players to play in a pro style attack, which provided Weis the tools he needed to implement the offense he wanted to run...in particular Quinn.

.500 at Stanford isn't a resounding success of course, but it is one of the toughest jobs in the country. Weis will do well at ND but Willingham did provide him the players he needed to succeed. BTW, Weis is a proven success as an OC, not a HC. Unless I missed something he has exactly one year of HC experience. Let's see how this thing turns out first before we call him proven (not that I think it won't).
