Nice shout-out again this week.
  1. 17. Haynes King, Georgia Tech (Previous Rank: 16)
    Week 6:
    12-of-25, 151 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT; 46 rush yards, 1 TD
    Season: 119-of-191, 1,631 yards, 16 TD, 6 INT; 222 rush yards, 2 TD
The Miami Hurricanes' decision not to kneel and subsequent fumble with 33 seconds left on the clock would have been a non-story if King didn't then connect with Christian Leary for a 44-yard touchdown pass and the game-winning score 32 seconds later. It was a wild way to bounce back from an embarrassing loss to Bowling Green in Week 5.

I was also digging around and there are only 2 freshmen WR in the national top 20 or so in a few receiving stats like total TD, ypc, stuff like that - our very own Eric Singleton, Jr. and some kid from OK - Nick Anderson who, upon digging further, racked up half his TDs against a cupcake (Tulsa).

So I'm going with Singleton, Jr. as best freshman WR in the country

I think he’s every bit as good as McCollum.

What was McCollum's reasons for transferring? Did him and Key have a falling out or something because it wasn't like he wasn't getting any playing time.

NIL money is the likely reason anyone that's playing transfers. It's like open free agency in the NFL.
That and I think he was getting some bad advice. He thought/was led to believe that he'd be seen more nationally with a guy like Drake Maye throwing to him. He was never going to be the primary target there that he was here though and I think he thought or was told he would. Although the way we re-vamped the WR room and with King spreading it out well, he probably wouldn't be our featured WR either.

Here's the Haynes King part:

Grade Tier: A-

Haynes King, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Transferred from:
Texas A&M

2023 stats: 1,631 passing yards, 16 TD passes, 6 interceptions, 222 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs

How he has fared so far: King, a former top-50 recruit who opened the past two seasons as Texas A&M's starter, has been productive in his first season with Georgia Tech. He has four games of 290 passing yards or more, and three of 42 rushing yards or more. King has had multiple touchdown passes in five games, and his 16 TD passes are tied for third nationally. He has been a solid contributor on the ground, especially with 53 yards on only six carries in a road win against Wake Forest, and ranks No. 16 nationally in total offense. Entering Week 6, King and LSU's Jayden Daniels were the only FBS quarterbacks with at least 1,400 passing yards, 150 rushing yards and 15 touchdown passes.

Bonus LOL:
Grade Tier: D-
i

Jeff Sims, Nebraska Cornhuskers

Transferred from:
Georgia Tech

2023 stats: 220 pass yards, 1 TD pass, 4 interceptions, 156 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD

How he has fared so far: Sims brought starting experience and dual-threat skills to Nebraska's offense under a new coaching staff but had a very rough start before an ankle injury late in a Week 2 loss to Colorado. The accuracy and turnover issues that surfaced at times during his time at Georgia Tech showed up as he had three interceptions in a painful opening loss to Minnesota, and then three more giveaways (two lost fumbles, one interception) in the Colorado debacle. Sims' running ability jumped out -- he had a 57-yard touchdown run against Colorado -- but so did the mistakes, and Nebraska is moving forward with Heinrich Haarberg at QB.
