They ain’t pretty.

In the research the NCAA conducted, it shows that only 59% of scholarship FBS football players who entered their name in the transfer portal transferred to another school and received a scholarship at the next destination. Among those scholarship players who entered the portal, 33% (834) still remain active and 8% transferred without athletic aid.

FBS football saw the most student-athletes enter the transfer portal (2,538) of any sport, but men's basketball had the highest percentage of student-athletes in the portal with 31% (1,692) of its athletes entering in the year 2021. FBS saw 16% of its athletes enter the portal, while women's basketball had 22% (1,134) enter during the 12-month period.

The NCAA analyzed data for all of the sports under its jurisdiction and found that only 30% (9,101) of Division I athletes who entered the portal across all sports transferred and received athletic aid at their new school, and 47% (14,293) of all entrants remain active.

That’s called “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.”

It ain’t. Players overestimate how good they are. Georgia Tech players, if you can’t earn a spot on our roster, you’re probably looking at a non-P5 program or FBS if you enter the portal.

Wow, so around 50% of athletes that entered the portal are no longer in college.

Grass is normally greener over the septic tank fill lines

I'm guessing this will be a huge talking point soon. I guarantee you there will be some who will want the university that the player is portalling from to offer the "non player" scholarship to allow the now non-athlete to finish school if he isn't picked up out of the portal. You will get the crybaby "but...muh education"

This is the fact that I *hope* eventually seeps into the teams and will slow down the transfer rate.
I wouldnt be surprised to see it increase. 95% of these guys think they will make the NFL when they graduate high school, the youngest guys in particular may see this stat and say I know I'm in the top 50% so I got nothing to worry about.

The flip side is a fair number of these portal players are getting ’processed’. Either take a medical or try your luck with another school. Unfortunately, if you are 1-2 years out of HS, you probably recently turned down your best options.

How may of the kids in the portal were "encouraged" to enter by their former coaches for roster management?

This may be true, but of the 50% who actually land at another school it seems most of their destinations are a significant downgrade in terms of conference, ranking, etc. I highly doubt many of the transfers go to a better program. Gibbs is on the tail end of the distribution I think. Maybe the players will eventually take all this into consideration.

Or they can attempt to overreach without penalty anymore. Players walking away from top schools will find a home. Grad transfers will likely benefit too. They can play football for fun while working on a Masters. Although, that isn't much of a change for them.

How many are attempted grad transfers?

They ain’t pretty.

Part of this is because the NCAA granted so many kids a Covid year; but kept the total scholarship allotment the same. So you have a 15-20% large pool of players vying for the same number of scholarships.

I guess we'll see if the 54% number is similar when there are 15-20% fewer players next year.
