Tuesday Humor: Jim Rome's take on "Softball Guy"

I haven't really ever liked Jim Rome or many other sports pundits of his mold, (Kincaid, most of the 790 crew, ESPN PTI guys) but this "softball guy" rant is pretty accurate.

I thought of about 3 different people right off the bat! :laugher:

I learned to appreciate him on radio more...particularly now that he is older. His actual "takes" do not match his look which is naturally smug. He is actually not smug at all. His tv show is not nearly as effective.

He is a traditionalist sports guy...conservative...expects accountability...can't stand whiners. He is very much a "facts are stubborn things" type of guy.

I do not get to catch the radio show as much as I would like...but I also like the way he has running jokes that will go on for ages...even if only mentioned once a month.

If Rome ever pisses you off, take comfort in the fact that he will never live this down:

I did not like him then either...what was that?...20 years ago?

Of course...that entire incident was staged. times change...people change.

In a current era where 99% of sports hosts are idiots (Atlanta has the worst of the worst)....it is refreshing to have someone out there with a respect for sports tradition and individual accountability.

He is a guaranteed laugh every day...wish I had more time to listen.

The funny part is Jim Rome is "Angry Softball Guy". That is his whole shtick.

I love fat softball guy. Your hits are either homeruns or outs because there is no way you can even jog to first base.

It was staged? I have never heard that before. Where did you get that information?

that is just my opinion...it has never been set in stone that it was real or fake.

Talk2 was a talk show hosted by Jim Rome on ESPN2 from 1993 to 1998.

The Everett incident

Jim Rome's show achieved the ultimate in notoriety when he welcomed Jim Everett onto the show in 1994. Jim Everett claimed for the past few years Rome had been calling him "Chris". Within the first few seconds of welcoming Everett onto the show, Rome instantly called out Everett by saying, "...somewhere along the way Jim, you ceased being Jim and you became Chris." Rome intended to insult Everett's manhood by comparing him to female tennis player Chris Evert. After Everett warned Rome that if he called him "Chris" one more time, they would have to cut to a commercial break. Rome said "ok, Chris", and Everett attacked him, flipping over the table in the process. It's been questioned if that fight had been staged, as Everett never hit or punched Rome.

The main reason I think it wasn't staged is that it made both people involved look bad and was a major (albeit temporary) setback for Rome's career, especially with ESPN. Why would they have agreed to do it? This was not Kaufman and Lawler on Letterman. Speaking of that:

You can also find extended versions that show the whole thing in context.
