Two questions: Marcus Wright and Toss Sweep

Where has Marcus Wright been? He was one of the better blocking A-backs last year, and he doesn't seem to be getting much playing time. I know that we now have Anthony Allen, but it seems as if Peeples has jumped Marcus. Anyone have any information on this?

Also, where has the toss sweep gone? I trust CPJ, but this play has somewhat disappeared (compared to last year). I do like the new inside handoff (I can't remember it being stopped once), but the sweep is a perfect counter to this play. I know CPJ likes to call it near the goal line for Cox, but I do remember it being called for Roddy other places on the field.

We did call it against Clemson. We were 3rd and 3 and we got 1 yard off it. Roddy was the one who got it btw.

I guess what I meant to say was that last year, it seemed like we ran it 4+ times per game, whereas this year I don't remember it being called as much. Of course, the sample size is pretty small. Also, how about the new formation we ran on the goal line against Clemson. Looked like the old Power-I. Does anyone who followed CPJ at Navy or GSU remember him doing this, and how many other formations do you remember him running? I know I saw a video where they had 3 WRs in a stack at GSU, but I don't remember anything else different.

Even when the toss doens't get to the edge, it strings out the defense and requires them to run a lot, and it keeps the perimeter defenders and safeties mindful that it might be called. I'm with you, we need to see it three or four times a game just for those reasons.

Paul Johnson has a great "wrinkle" to the toss sweep that I hope we finally see Thursday. Whenever Navy ran it, they scored.

Watch it in slomo. Anthony Allen runs right past the playside OLB and blocks the free safety, then the OLB makes the tackle.

Vertical seam route to the A back?

Yeah, we scored on that vs VT, first pass of the game.

I think many people have forgotten that Embry Peeples' redshirt was "burned" before Marcus Wright's was. It wasn't until Peeples got hurt (ankle) that Wright stepped in. Wright did a great job blocking...especially in the UGA game, but apparently nobody was paying attention to the great job Peeples was doing before his injury.

As for the toss sweeps...who was the primary lead blocker on that play last year? Lucas Cox. Where we gain a tremendous running threat in AA, we lose perhaps the unsung hero of last years team on the field.

When we put the A-Back in motion against Clemson one of their DB's or LB's moved over to the side we were motioning to and they stuffed the play.

Are you referring to the toss sweep? If so, this is why I think the new play where we gave the ball to the A-back is a perfect compliment to the sweep. By the way, does anyone know what this play is called? It's difficult to refer to it as the "play where we gave the ball to the A-back."

I've been calling it the A Back Counter. Crap if I know what it's really called. But it is a counter play, and it is to the A Back, so meh..

Peeples has been the best blocking back thus far this year, both big runs he put his man on the ground.

I don't remember it specifically when PJ was at Southern, but I noticed a power formation like it in goal line situations on DVDs I recently got of Southern's 1989/1990 championships, when PJ had moved on to Hawaii (when our own Giff Smith was on the DL). It may have been there before he left and I never noticed; it was the first thing I thought of when I saw us in that formation Thursday night.

We ran a few different power I goaline plays at the scrimmages.

This is what we adjusted to do against Georgia. It was pointed out by that Navy blogger. What I don't get is why didn't we run the play again but tell Allen to block the LB instead? Or were they switching up which one (the OLB or FS) that was going to move closer to stop the A-Back.

what happened to the quick pass to bey bey? i haven't seen that at all this year. You can't throw 30 yards down the field every pass play and be successful. we need to have shorter passes that will hopefully open up the running.

+1. Hopefully JN was getting trigger happy with all the long passes. We need to establish an intermediate passing game.
