“It is a pretty silly process if you really look at it,” Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran said Friday. “You’re not going to know who is the best until the end of the season.

“I mean, from my experience, I’d say the rankings don’t really mean anything. Looking at the top 10, every week things can change. Even when we were ranked No. 1, we won games and still dropped some weeks.”



While the preseason No. 1 rarely matches the postseason No. 1 — just 17 percent of the time in the history of the AP poll — the preseason rankings usually are in the ballpark. For example, 16 of the 22 teams — 73 percent — that have played in BCS title games in the past 11 years started the season ranked in the top five of the coaches’ poll. And seven of the past eight AP preseason No. 1 teams finished the season in the top three, the exception being Georgia last year.
