UGa\'s not recruiting the state of Georgia???

The article in Wed's AJC struck me as odd when they listed the Dog commitments to sign a letter of intent in Feb. The list has 10 commits on it & six (6) are from out of state. 3 from NCar, 2 from Fla & 1 SCar. Is UGa just not getting commits from Georgia HS players or do they think they're getting better players from adjoining states?
This also blows to smithereens the popular, posted belief around the Tech crowd that Ga dominates the state of Georgia & always will. Heck, O'L showed that ain't true, but this yr's commits cements the fact that GT, Aub, Clem can get what they want from this state also. In fact, with Ga taking so many out-of-state commits, it is wide open for the Yellow Jackets to get just about anybody we want, i.e. Thomas, Clark, Tucker, Riles.
Coach Gailey, finally, stated in his last radio show that GT would recruit Georgia 1st. That followed on the heels of Gailey's publicly printed statement that GT would recruit the Big 3 states of Georgia, Florida & Texas. I'm just taking all this info to post that GT is now back to making significant inroads into recruiting Georgia & the big school in Athens is taking what they can get.
Here's the list of Ga's commitments so far;

Only 4 of 10 from Georgia

P.S. The 2 Hargrave students, Bryant & Lang, are products of NCar & Ga HS, respectively.

Too Early to tell...

Ace,
Come back to the barn...
This will be interesting to follow, but over the last 3 years...the D-o-g-s have absolutley dominated instate recruiting. Every significant contributor is a state of Georgia boy.

My opinion is that most on their board are waiting until after their seasons to gain the most attention for their commitment.
Most of these guys will have a press conference in the cafeteria, and do the hat dance.

Where U[sic]ga has really dominated is keeping Aub, Fla, Clem, and Tenn out of the state, not necessarily beating us. I think most Georgia kids, self-select Tech out of the process.

Personally, I'd like to see us focus on a few more guys from the Tampa Bay Metro and Jacksonville Area.
For some reason neither Miami &FSU don't seem to get a lot of those guys. Tech ought to be really successful out of major metro areas.

Re: Too Early to tell...

This is an age old debate, and doesn't show any signs of changing.
My point is this: the only way I want Ga. Tech to be concerned with the in state recruiting battle with ugag, is that suddenly, all the in state blue chippers are qualified to pass the school work at Tech. Its not that way now. However, I do expect TECH to get its fair share of the in state blue chippers that ARE qualified. As you already know, that number is pretty small. Also, to this group of recruits, I am not too sure that its ugag, AU, fsu, etc. that we are competing against.

I have said for a long time that Ga. Tech does not market itself well to its potential market of buyers (recruits). TECH is an internationally recognized institute of higher (way higher, lol) learning, and it needs to conduct itself that way.
We need 45 great football players to win conference and national championships. That they also have to be able to pass the class work at Tech only means that we have to cross some borders to find them. One thing is for sure though. The majority of our market already knows about Ga. Tech, regardless of where they are playing high school football.
Sure, I wish that the majority of our roster be from Ga., but that's not the way it will be if we hope to field the best team.

Re: Too Early to tell...

We have to recruit Georgia first and best. Academics this or that is true to a point, but don't tell me for one second that quite a few of ugag's best could not get in school here. They could. We have to recruit better.

Re: Too Early to tell...

Hey Tex, I consider Odell Thugman to be one of ugags best. Do you want him here? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hugelaugh.gif

The kicker is...

UGA does not have a lot of scholarships to give this year. So I am very surprised to see that number from out of state.

Ummm....sure....yeah...that\'s right...

I'm just taking all this info to post that GT is now back to making significant inroads into recruiting Georgia & the big school in Athens is taking what they can get.

I think what we are seeing here unfortunately is UGA's ability to expand its' recruiting base over the past few years. Two of the top few players in NC are commited and a lot of 4 and 5 star type players in GA and FLA are considering GA.

Regarding the kids in GA, it's kind of like FSU is in the state of FL. They'll get several of the top kids in the state on signing day.

Make no mistake about it. GA will still who they want, give or take a few, out of the top players in the state. They have always been able to do that for the most part. It's just now for the first time in 15 years they have a coaching staff that can maximize the talent.

A few additional points, if I may

GTg8r--Yep, the last 3 yrs the Dogs have outrecruited the Jackets in Ga, but with 11 in-state Jackets last yr, the gap is diminishing. Don't think UGa can wait til the last moment this yr as they only have 8-9 more 'ships to commit to & can't chance the wait. UGa ain't holding nobody out this yr as U of Fla already has 2 top-notch commits that U of Ga has also offered. Tampa & J'ville have been good to Tech & we can recruit there, but non-metro areas tend to be like non-metro Ga areas, for big state schools.
LLCool--The # of qualifieds in Ga is not small, but we will have to recruit Fla, Tex, La, Ala. In 2-3 yrs there will be a slight majority from Ga on our roster.
Tex--You're right.
Crew--It is very surprising. What's going on?
Kramer--I may be wrong & Coach G's not making inroads in Ga, but last yr's haul of eleven plus several decent walk-ons from the Atl metro says to me that he's making significant inroads. Read it the way u want to. UGa's QB recruit committed to Duke before Ga. I'll certainly take the 4 Georgia commits Gailey has gotten in the past 3 mos over the 4 UGa has gotten every single recruiting season! UGa can't wait til signing day this yr, with maybe a single exception, & will have to commit to recruits way before signing day.

I'm afraid it has been going on a lot longer than that but I believe we came close to matching them last at least in quality, and will beat them in the future.

Re: Too Early to tell...

LLCool, I consider Pollock, Green, Bailey, Brandon Miller to be, if not now, in the future some of ugag's best. You did not want them in White & Gold?

We can all pick out specific examples to either extreme, but I am tired of hearing this mentality exemplified by the fact that almost every time we get out recruited by ugag here it is because so and so kid did not have the grades, academics, blah-blah-blah. We need to do better that is all. I am not willing to concede them one damn recruit.

Re: Too Early to tell...

Simple, just list how many ugag signees from in-state made 1100 on their SAT. Yes there are exceptions, but the rule is: that's your pool of ugag signees to draw from as possible GT signees. News flash...caution...no diving allowed cause the pool ain't deep! THWG

Re: Too Early to tell...

Can you supply that list everyone keeps talking about? Or maybe to put it another way, how many players on their team did we recruit?

I'll tell you straight up, Andy Bailey will not be an asset for UGA in the future. I know alot of special teams guys at UGA and my friend, who plays for Ugag, tells me that Bailey is a cocky guy and is fairly inconsistent at practice. The kid is so cocky, he was quoted in the Red&Black as saying: "What does anyone remember Billy Bennett for? I'll tell you, missing the 3 FG's at LSU last year." The kid thinks he's hot shit and can do no wrong. I sure as hell wouldn't want him in white and gold.

Tex, we have to! Yes, of course there are some at ugag that could be playing for us, but that intersection is pretty small. Also, don't forget that every school has players that fall into the legacy category (They have had only one choice for a looonnng time).
If you are saying that we only recruit kids that ugag recruits, I disagree violently! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eekhair.gif

Re: Too Early to tell...

JWJ, I am not talking about Andy Bailey.
LLCJ, who said anything about only recruiting the players ugag recruits? WTH? And I am still waiting on that list, even if it is as small an intersection as you say (I think it is a little bigger than most think), of their players who we recruited. A lot of folks claim to know that only a very, very small group of their players could be admitted to GT. I would like to see proof of that list. NOT in any way saying I don't love our kids 100%. I just don't like the attitude that goes with us losing recruits, you know, well they are not qualified academically. I know that the 4 I listed are.
I am saying we can, and must, do better in Georgia.

A \"list\" of sorts

Using the HIVE prospects and commits list, I tallied the following:

Commits:
7 NOT recruited by UGA, 2 were
Prospects (3,4,5 star only)
17 NOT being recruited by UGA, 11 are
Prospects from GA (3,4,5 star only)
2 NOT being recruited by UGA, 8 ARE.

Yes, we have to recruit GA well, and get our share of those we want. That is the key, to me. Pollack was one we wanted, but not Thurman. Maybe not Greene, but I recall he committed very early and perhaps never gave anyone a shot except GA.

seems like a variety of issues there

Talked this over with my Ugag recruiting buff co-workers.

The state of GA is weak at WR, QB and DB...well after we signed Carlos that is. That's why they went out of state for those. The state is loaded with LBs, DTs, RBs (although few are qualified) and OL.

He says that Ugag 3 biggest needs DTs, WRs and DBs. Thus, they are going out of state for some of them.

As for us, this state is LOADED with LBs. It's a sick, sick, sick crop of extreme riches in state for LB recruiting. And in my esteemed opinion we need LBs very badly. There are enough for GT, UGA, FSU and AU to all sign great kids. A bunch of solid DTs (alot of studs who are underrated) in state (which we could always use) but I'm not sure how many can get into GT.

Calvin last year and Carlos Thomas this year. Otherwise, we're not beating them head to head much. And frankly we're not even trying.

frankly, not even trying?

Yoda:

I agree we may not attempt to recruit some good athletes, but for a variety of reasons. Which of these did you mean? or did you mean all?

a) Not trying because we know we cannot sway kids away from GA? this may be true for some UGAG-baptized kids; happens some for Tech too (Kelly Rhino)

b) Not trying because most of GA's recruits cannot meet our qualifications? this is the case perhaps more than we know

c) Not trying because our cirriculum has ZERO appeal to the recruit? again, probably more than we will know. A good student who wants to be involved in politics or journalism isnt thinking about Tech

d) did I miss any significant reasons?

GT Ace...

Kramer--I may be wrong & Coach G's not making inroads in Ga, but last yr's haul of eleven plus several decent walk-ons from the Atl metro says to me that he's making significant inroads.

I agree, Gailey is making inroads if he is getting that many players. But is he getting the BEST players in the state?

Read it the way u want to. UGa's QB recruit committed to Duke before Ga.

Not sure why this matters.

I'll certainly take the 4 Georgia commits Gailey has gotten in the past 3 mos over the 4 UGa has gotten every single recruiting season!

Unless I'm reading it wrong, according to the insiders.com list, both UGA and GT have 3 commits from the state of GA at this point.

GT:
Carlos Thomas ****
Taalib Tucker ***
Tony Clark **

UGA:
Trip Chandler **
Ian Smith ****
Marcus Washington****

I don't know what makes you so sure Chan has the better commits based on that list. Looks good for both so far. Both teams will pick up some quality recruits over the next few months.

GT will get players from the state of GA. However, as usual UGA will probably have more of the top players in the state. That's where GT needs to improve in recruiting.
