North Carolina defensive coordinator Gene Chizik is stepping down from his post to spend more time with his family.

Chizik announced the decision Thursday afternoon, writing in a letter that it has been "extremely difficult" to live apart from his family for the first time in his coaching career. Chizik's wife and children remained in Alabama when he left for the North Carolina job in 2015.

Chizik previously had served as Auburn's head coach from 2009 to 2012, guiding the Tigers to a national title in 2010.

Tar Heels linebackers coach John Papuchis will replace Chizik as defensive coordinator, the school announced in a release. Papuchis served as Nebraska's defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2014 before joining the UNC staff.

"At every stop in my coaching career, I have emphasized to my players that family must come first; that family comes before football," Chizik wrote in the letter to the North Carolina community. "Simply put, it is time for me to walk the walk."

Chizik oversaw improvement in North Carolina's defense in 2015, when the team won the ACC Coastal title. North Carolina went 19-8 during his time as defensive coordinator.

UNCs defensive stats the last 3 years - Chizik was hired after 2014.
2016: 24.9 ppg 418.5 ypg 5.37 ypp
2015: 22.6 ppg 411.3 ypg 5.5 ypp
2014: 38.9 ppg 495.7 ypg 6.53 ypp

Nebraska's defensive stats 2012-2014 under Papuchis
2014: 26.4 ppg 383.7 ypg 5.37 ypp
2013: 24.8 ppg 370.7 ypg 5.21 ypp
2012: 27.6 ppg 360.6 ypg 5.24 ypp

Hard to tell from articles if he was fired or his contract simply not renewed with the departure of Pelini as all the articles saying he took the UNC job refer to him as "former Nebraska DC." And obviously going from DC to position coach isn't the best move.

the only stat that matters...

2015 Lost 38-31
2016 Lost 48-20

From my rough memory I think we moved the ball at will in the 1st half of both games and still moved the ball decently in the 2nd half of both games. But they had a knack for limiting points despite gaudy yards stats. The 2015 game was lost on a turnover inside the 5 and Gotsis getting a BS targeting ejection for tackling their QB (again IIRC).

Why the hell didn't his family move to the triangle with him?

Who would willingly live in Alabama when presented with a better option?

He may have slowed us down slightly more than his predecessors (which was basically not at all).

Assuming his family remained in the Auburn area, and assuming with no idea that they kept the same house - I imagine it was a nice place. Some people like a smaller town atmosphere.

Keeping his family as far away from the swofford mafia as possible.

Again, not knowing # & age of children, letting them grow up knowing it is correct to say "yes, sir" and "no, sir" , etc without apology

And to allow them to grow up in a place where they are not forced to acknowledge that biological boys are girls.

But his family, idk.

At least this guy won't be waiting for him at the airport this time around:
