UNC Game

Am I the only one worried about the game against UNC this weekend. I am worried for the following reasons:
1) Hollings is out for the season. Our Offense has been one dimensional this year. We will need someone to step up. Running game is an unknown. This leads to my second point.
2) UNC's only bright spon on D is their secondary. This could really hurt us if we cannot establish the run and have to pass the ball. I dont like our chances against a good secondary with Suggs not looking off his primary receiver.
3) Durant is a very mobile and athletic QB. If that kid from BYU gave us trouble with running around then Durant could prove costly.

This game is going to be tough. If we dont capitalize on turnovers, which we havent been, then we could be in for a loss.

Just one man's opinion.

I am concerned as well. Do think that at some point our passing game is going to pick it up. Still feel we'll be able to run the ball. Will we have the success we had with Hollings. Well, probably not. He was nothing short of unreal. I still feel we match up well with their front 7. Suggs is very capable. Our WR are very capable. It's time to step it up and get it done!!

Their O is very good I think. I believe our D is as well. We seem to really be finding a grove there.

I think if we can win the TO margin and play solid special teams we can and will win this game!

Go Jackets!

Bear in mind UNC's defense CANNOT STOP THE RUN.

Our O-Line opened those holes for Tony and I fully expect us to have a great deal of success with Ace as well.

As for the passing game the motto for BOB should be "Keep it simple stupid." AJ is not the QB we all had hoped but if given the right tools he might be adequate.

Our defense should be fine against Durant. I would imagine that since we have seen two QB's that do a lot of running already the D should be ready to face another one.

Have faith.

I think UNC will do what the past 3 teams have tried against us...stack the line and make us pass. At Clemson, this worked because it was rainy and AJ wasn't on his game. BYU did a fair job of stopping us too, until late in the game.

I expect UNC to stack 7 or 8 on the line, and play one-on-one with our wideouts. They'll try to stuff the run and put pressure on AJ. If their secondary really is that good, then they will have some success. If the O-Line holds up well, then we will beat it.

I don't want to take anything away from TH. He ws an amazing runner to watch. Bet remember that the line has been excellent at the run this year. The difference with TH was that when the hole wasn't there, he would cut it back and go a different direction...that's something we haven't had for a while in a RB. But for the most part, the line was opening up huge holes for him to run through. I expect that those same holes will be there for ACE. The only problem I see is that TH could run around the corner like no one else. Do we have another back that has that speed to turn it up field at the sidelines like he did?

The key to the UNC game is our offensive line, in particular our o-line coaching. We have had a significant downgrade in our o-line coaching, from almost any of our past coaches, especially Mac and Marrone.
The run blocking has been decent...not great. Most of Tony Hollings yards, especially the first 3 games, occurred when the play was designed to go inside, but nothing was there, so he cut it outside on his own.
The pass blocking was a little better against BYU, but was downright pathetic against klimpsum...even though they were only rushing 3 or 4 guys. Most of the time against klimpsum, AJ barely had time to even look for the first receiver, if not just downright protect the ball during an immediate sack.
I am not that concerned about our running game. We don't have anyone with the combination of power and speed that Tony had, but we have some talent back there..even if they are young.
If the o-line coaching and play improves, especially pass blocking, we will be fine and win this game. I don't blame AJ for being a little shell-shocked after the lack of pass blocking at the klimpsum game. If we pass block like we did against klimpsum again, even Johnny Unitas would have trouble...may he rest in peace.
Here's to hoping our o-line play (especially pass blocking) improves against UNC...we will need significantly improved o-line coaching to accomplish our goals.

Y'all have hit on a lot of good points in this thread. Based on BOB's interview on 790 alluded to earlier I HOPE WE:

1) Use Bilbo in the option package. One way to attack an overload up front is the option, put pressure on the perimeters. Needs to try it early not wait for 4Q or until we are down 2-3 touchdowns.

2) Simple quick passes, slants when 1 0n 1 coverage on the corners, and something over the middle in the seam of the zone if their backers are cheating up for the run. Give AJ a safety valve. Did y'all see last night how effectively Ragone (sic) would toss to his running back in the flats if the downfield receivers were covered? Suggs needs that guy over there in case first read is not there. If the back is covered he can put it row 3 then start afresh the next play.

I'm curious, would any of you guys really be worried if Hollings were 100% and playing?

I know I wouldn't be worried.

Even though UNC's defense has been atrocious I'm concerned about scoring points.

I'm sure we can keep them under 25 and confident we can hold them under 20.

I just hope the coaches are patient and don't panic. Otherwise we could make some big mistakes and get behind.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Kind of off topic, but Louisville was only effective doing this after having success with the vertical passing game. FSU went to a deep ((soft)) zone because Ragone was torching their man coverage. Ragone adjusted, read the coverage and hit the outlet after the defense had droped off.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Yes. I would be. Because then we KNOW they'd be stacking the line, and we'd have to rely on AJ, who has been, need I say, less than stellar. Now, maybe they'll assume we'll rely on our passing game more and leave the line open for ACE to run through.

Bottom line, no matter how much smack I talk about Tech, or how confident I am, I'm always a bit concerned over every game. There are always weak points to be exploited, and other teams always seem to find them at the worst times. It's better to be concerned than cocky. Look at FSU last night. Corso made the comment that before the game the FSU players wre actually talking about the Miami game. This was before the Louisville game! Oh, well.

If you weren't worried you have to be examined for saneness;just because we going to a conference game without our best offensive threat at RB and with a QB who charitably has been more than disappointing.(even against a defense last week ranked 103rd in the country!)This against a team which also has had an extra week to prepare for us.Worried, I think so.
Unless something doesn't change, this game has a fair possibility of getting real ugly, unfortunately.

Y'all may like to pile on AJ...but like I said....Johnny Unitas would have had trouble with the way our o-line has pass blocked. It damne sure has not been all AJ's fault.

Beeware you are right, it hasn't been all AJs fault. On the other hand, he has been a big part of it. I'm hoping we go to a shorter drop passing attack and try to get him to hit the slants and quick passes to open things up. That should help both the run and slow the d-line down a little for those plays that take longer to develop. I've watched the BYU tape several times now and I think he had plenty of time on most plays. Don't know if the problem was in the communication with receivers or bad reads or what but hopefully they have gotten things together this week in practice.

I would like to see some of DeBo as well. It can't hurt to give them a change of pace, and it sure would be nice to see him air one out.

Until we get our offensive act together, I am worried about all the remaining games except the Duke game.
