Quarterback Cade Thompson of Maryville (Tenn.) High switched his commitment from North Carolina to South Carolina after visiting with new Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier.
"I kind of had a change of heart," said Thompson, who led Maryville to two state titles in three years. "I always wanted to play in the SEC, and early on, when it was North Carolina and Clemson (offering scholarships), it didn't look like I was going to get a chance."
Running back Bryan Payton of Fort Wayne, Ind., who played in prep school at Fork Union Military Academy last season, also no longer is committed to the Tar Heels.
North Carolina received a commitment from highly regarded running back Montario Hardesty of New Bern High last weekend.
Duke has dropped defensive back Marquis Melvin of Whiteville High from its class. Whiteville coach Mark Little said Melvin qualifies for a scholarship by NCAA standards, but Duke's coaches had told him he needed to raise his SAT score to meet the school's admissions standards.
