Unusual nicknames

Georgia High Schools

Here is a link to a web site called "The Georgia High School Helmet Project".

The Georgia High School Helmet Project

In 2003, I compiled a list of all nicknames used in Georgia.

The most common used were: Bulldogs (27), Tigers (19), Eagles (18), Panthers (17), Indians & Wildcats (14).

Some of the more unique ones that I like are:

Twiggs Co. COBRAS, Jefferson and Pepperell DRAGONS, Long Co. BLUE TIDE, Tattnall Co. BATTLE CREEK WARRIORS, LaFayette RAMBLERS, Cairo SYRUPMAKERS, Brantley Co. BLUE HERONS, Clarkston ANGORAS, Gainesville RED ELEPHANTS, Johnson-Savannah ATOMSMASHERS and my two favorites, Glynn Academy RED TERRORS and Warren Co. SCREAMING DEVILS.

For the record, there were seven schools using YELLOW JACKETS. Also for the record, my alma mater is Norcross BLUE DEVILS, eight schools use that nickname.

Stateline,

Great website. Brought back a lot of old memories. I grew up in Warner Robins and went to high school there from 1962-66. I went to Warner Robins (Demons) my freshman year and transferred to Northside (Eagles) when it opened in 1963. Interestingly, the nickname for Warner Robins then was the Demons (still is) and the junior high school was the Imps.

Bee Gone, it's almost eerie that you posted right after I put up the information on GA High School nicknames. When I listed some of my favorites, DEMONS is actually one of my top ten favorites, but I could not remember (or find on my list) that it is indeed Warner Robins who are the DEMONS.

You answered a question I had without even knowing it, or without me even asking it. Thanks!

Stateline, that's a great web site, thanks for posting it. I have only made it through the L's thus far, but some of my favorites, be it the name or story behind the name, are:

Calhoun SANDCRABS, Danville LITTLE JOHNS, Dun EARWIGS, Exploration SCREAMING PENGUINS, Harrison GOLDEN GOBLINS, Huron RIVER RATS and Key OBEZAGS.

I can just hear the opposing coach's post game tirade after his team loses to the Danville LITTLE JOHNS, "Dam#it guys, I can't believe we just lost to those 'Little Pricks'!"

Re: Georgia High Schools

According to the link ghsfha.com 20 high schools have had the 'Yellow Jackets' as their nickname. Too bad many of them have been lost in consolidations.

Stateline, ghsfha.com is an excellent web site. I didn't know of it's existence until now.

Thanks for posting it!

I don't have time right now to read through the entire list of unusual nicknames but I have to believe the hands down winner is the Delta State "Fighting Okra". My son played baseball against them and has a tee shirt with their nickname on it.

I'm a graduate of Sidney M Lanier High School for Boys, 1965,and yes, we were known as 'The Poets'. Sidney Lanier was the poet laureate of GA long ago, wrote 'The Song of the Chattahoochee'. I really dont remember much else about him, maybe some vague rumors about Civil War vet, etc.

I moved to Macon in the middle of my first year of high school from Robert E Lee High School , the Fighting Ganders, believe it or not!?
