USC defensive line coach on star system

“I can take a three-star and make him a four-star, and I can take a four-star and make him a three- or two-star with the contacts I have,” Lawing said. “That’s how ridiculous recruiting on the Internet is. I took Chris Culliver (USC safety) from a three- to a five-star in three weeks. All you’ve got to do is talk to the right people.”

No, the number of stars is a very accurate way to determine exactly how the player will perform in college.

Agreed. Taylor Bennett had higher stars than Reggie, right? I can't believe we didn't play him.

Reggie was 3 star. Taylor was 2. But how the hell did a 3 star Reggie beat out both 4 star QB's Suggs and Bilbo as a true freshman. The recruiting services totally missed on that one.

I guess the motivation for a coach raising a kid's star rating is to increase the perception that the class is going well and hopefully attracting more recruits. Or to increase the perception that a coach is a good recruiter.

Suggs was horrible, Bilbo couldn't learn the playbook
