GO JACKETS!

#48 Alan Hennessey, #1 Eddie McAshan, #29 Kevin McNamara, #71 Tommy Jones

My job as a Student-Assistant FROSH Team coach that day was to keep three blue chippers - Andy Spiva (Chamblee), Tommy West (Gainesville) & Mickey Marvin (Milan, TN) - away from the Tennessee coaches for Rex Dockery. Talk about herding cats! Our less-than-impressive T-Club was right next to our meeting room that opened toward the Visitors Dressing Room in the basement of the old GTAA.

That night I had to take Marvin & his (helicopter) mother wherever they wanted in Atlanta & show them a good time (No, I don't remember where we went).

All three ended up signing with Tennessee. Spiva eventually ended up playing for the Falcons. Marvin for the Raiders, and West coaching at Clemson & Memphis.

Looks at the size of the OL and DL. They wouldn't even be linebackers in today's day and age!

Those were some sharp unis. I like the white astro turf cleats.
A quasi-return to the 1967 unis, updated a bit. Added names to the backs of the jerseys, the pro-style socks, white Riddell & adidas shoes.... can't remember if the trim was black or dark navy blue...... only two stripes on the sleeve vice three on the Dodd era jerseys.

The shoes were always a problem in the early days... SpotBilt, adidas, Puma, & Riddell all had problems with the soles separating from the uppers due to the heat from the field & the torque & stress big bodies put on them. Where was Nike? About 2 or 3 years away from showing up on the Left Coast, most notably in the USC-Domers comeback game in 1975.

Almost all of this was Fulcher & Baughan listening to the seniors... Fulcher had been around for a bit of the Carson era & knew how unhappy we were with the unis, yes even the ones y'all like for throwbacks. And Maxie had some good ideas for the pro look.
