First of all, let me say I am a Gailey supporter, but the last couple of weeks have shaken that.
At most places, when the coach is looking to leave, the school will step up and make the contract sweeter to prevent it or put clauses in the contract to make it tougher to leave. Just this year, we have seen it happen at West Virginia and South Carolina. They do that to remove the uncertainty and to keep a coach they think is doing great things for the program. We've seen it happen in the past at Louisville, Georgia, and many other places. Granted, these are college to college moves, not moves to the pros, but the point is the schools tried to do something to retain the coach.
It appears as if the AA did nothing to keep Gailey, rather they wished him luck.
I don't think any coach can be at a place where his short term future (4 years or less) is in question. The impact on recruiting would be too great. That's why most of these contracts have some sort of automatic renewal (including Gaileys), so the coach can look the recruits in the eye and say "my contract runs through 2012".
It will not impact this years class (though I am sure schools are trying) as they are too far down the line, but I would assume this situation will be used early and often by other schools starting with next years class.
DRAD now has a coach that has shown that he would leave given the right situation and a pending financial crisis in the AA. He must have a stable winning football program to generate revenues and motivate the donors.
The only way I think it gets solved on the field is to beat Georgia and win the ACC. That was the point of the original post.
Anything other than that, and DRAD will be in a difficult situation regarding CCG.
