Was Josh Down on that odd play in the 2nd quarter?

I'm watching the replay on ESPN360 of the play in the 2nd quarter where Nesbitt ran up the middle, stopped, ran a bit more and then they blew a whistle to kill the play. I swear he didn't hit the ground, and unlike when I was at the game and thought I heard an original whistle after it looked like he was down (from 70 yards away) I didn't hear a whistle at all in the broadcast. The only whistle was after he was halfway to the endzone and stopped, and then kept running.

Seems to me like we should've had another TD..not that it matter because we won, but it still looks like that should've been some extra points we missed out on thanks to the refs..did anyone else catch this? The only thing is his knee might have been down but it didn't look like it, and I didn't hear a whistle (but there may have been one)...

There was a whistle, but no, he was not down. And unfortunately, it can't be reviewed since the whistle did blow. The whistle you heard was a second whistle since he kept running.

Josh was absolutely NOT down.

That play being blown dead was ridiculous. He was absolutely not down, and it would've been a huge momentum play for GT had the play been allowed to continue. The refs blew SEVERAL calls in that game yesterday.

ACC officiating has been AWFUL this year and not just in our games. I think they moved some of the b-ball refs over or something.

I don't get it either. How does the ACC leadership see the blown holding and pass interference no-calls against UVA and allow those refs to continue? There's probably some Jeff Bowden-esque nepotism somewhere behind the scenes of ACC football and b-ball refs.

Horrible HORRIBLE hold on their third-down conversion from their own endzone. I was all of 10 feet from it. Lord, it was terrible. If I was D-Morg, I'd be furious over that one.

Yea I was screaming over that one. I got a bit upset watching the replay when the announcers were like "And they avoided a hold in the endzone too which would've been a safety!" - NO they did NOT. They avoided the refs seeing it...

Guys, the refs are not blind. I know the play you are talking about, and the ref was looking right at it. I know, because he was held for at least two seconds and I actually looked at the ref to see if he was watching, and he was looking right at it. There was no way he missed seeing it. He chose not to call it. That has to be an NCAA directive on how to call the game.

Really? Damn. I must've looked at the ref just after that then and he was looking downfield (right after the ball was passed). Blah refs, we won anyway.

It was a hold, and it was pretty blatant. HOWEVER, to get it called in the endzone takes a lot. He's got to REALLY mean to hold the crap out of him, and then admit to the ref that he did it and that he enjoyed it.

Yeah, as upset as I was at that call, it doesn't surprise me that refs are hesitant to make a call that directly results in points unless it's just absolutely freaking obvious. Granted, for us, that's how most of us perceive it yesterday, but that's the nature of the beast when it comes to ref calls.

There's no excuse for not calling that hold in the endzone. None. That was the ref's call too, he should no longer be employed.

Agreed, but it's not only the ACC officiating. We've noticed numerous officiating mistakes in other conferences as well as ACC.

Could be it's just a bad few weeks, hope so anyway.

I don't think anybody can say with 100% certainty that Nesbitt wasn't down. On the replay it looked like his knees never hit the ground, but his butt or left elbow looked like they were down. We don't know, because the camera was on his right side. The ref was on his left side, so I'm sure he saw Nesbitt's left elbow hit the ground.

If you are on top of a defender who is on the ground then you are down. I thought he was down.

No, you are not...your body has to hit the ground. That being said--the camera angle cannot convince me 100% that he was not down or was down, so I will defer to the refs who made the call. This is not one to lambast the refs over -- the hold, maybe--this nope.

Not true, but it probably should be true and I expect the rule to be changed eventually to protect players who are wrapped up but laying on other players.

It may be exciting when I player who was tackled pops up running because it rolled over a defender, but then the defenders use that possibility as an excuse to clock a player who is being held up but not fully down.

It will be similar to the "in the grasp" rule for QBs that aggravated so many as the officials became over protective.

Yeah, as for the play referred to by the OP, on the replay I definitely thought his elbow hit the ground, so it looked like the right call.

I don't remember any other calls from the game except for that FSU 2-point conversion. I thought the PI could've gone either way at the least.
