Was the UVA game good for the program?

While I was enjoying the ride to top 20 ranking and a real shot at being #1 in the conference with hopes of a BCS game, in the back of my punkin head was a nagging thought: Ralph.

Had we won the game I would have thrilled beyond belief and probably fallen into my own trap of unrealistic expectations. (What if we had won the ACC with a trip to the OB, but as it appears likely by now, get trashed by *shudder* UGa? )

Winning the conference in his first year would have put PJ in a very uncomfortable position with unrealistic expectations for years 2 through 3 & 4 while still installing his offense and recruiting his players. Ralph in his own words achieved his five year goal in his first year, and the program has been sliding ever since.

It may be nothing be rationalization, but I have to believe this loss was actually good in the long run for the program, as painful as it was. I also think it helps to prepare us better for November 29.

I cannot fathom that any loss is overall good for the program --in the long run or otherwise.

Winning the ACC this year would be great. The team is young --youngest in the conference-- the team is learning under a new head coach, running a new offense, the defense is being run by a new coordinator. This team is only going to get better regardless of what happens the remainder of this season.

The ACC is down this year so there's no time like the present to take advantage of that and win the conference and go to a BCS bowl. The team will be better next season, but other teams may very well be better as well. There is no time like the present to accomplish your team goals; win the ACC, go to a New Year's Day Bowl, beat UGA.

Nope

Now, 2006 ND game was good for the program (even though it was a loss) So yeah, if you go out and have a close game with a top 5 program, it's good for the program.

UVA is not even ranked AFTER beating us.

No, the '06 ND loss was not good for the program. Our program was mature at the time, and it was time for the team to step up and get it done and we didn't.

if we win out then you may be able to say that the UVA game was a wakeup call.

However if we win out and don't go to ACCCG b/c of UVA loss then that will be an expensive wakeup call.

If we lose to F$U then this post is obviously moot.

No.

Winning this game would have put GT on the map, increased the likelihood of good commits this year, increased our preseason coverage next year, etc. Losing this game puts us in the "yawn" category of college football teams. Again.

PJ may very well turn our program into something special, but his last and final opportunity to do that this year is in Athens.

Miami's younger

We would be knocking on the door of the top 10 at this moment if we had won the game this past weekend. Since we didn't, we plummeted out of the rankings. This harmed our recruiting, our fans morale, our chances at an ACCCG, our chances for a bowl After Dec 31st, and the list goes on.

This was not positive.

Oh, no question the loss was a big time downer for this season.

But I wonder if over the long haul, 3-5 years, it will actually end up being a positive. Again, I bring up the example of too much too soon in Maryland.

I think we'll know if 3-5 years. If we have totally forgotten about this game, and we're winning big time with the big boys, then yes, it may have been good for the program. If we're still losing to teams we should beat, and we manage Chanesque losses and as such, cannot recruit worth ****, then I'd say it hurt us. But, it's one game in the first season of a new head coach that uses a radically different offensive system. We've been playing football for 100 plus years. I don't think this loss will be the one that somehow sinks the good ship Tech.

No way, Jose. This loss didn't let some of the air out of our balloon. We stepped on our own dick. Never a good thing.

If we didn't lose to UVA, we would have lost to someone else.

Same with 06, we would have had a loss, one way or another.
