I stirred them up pretty well over there (hive) but with few exceptions I was in the distinct minority. With the exception of ncjacket (no offense..I just know which side of the fence you sit) what do you think of my hypothesis: Title IX is slowly eroding college football (recent ex. Tulane) and soon (~10 years) Division 1A will consist of only the 5 power conferences (ACC, PAC 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC and ND). The midmajors will not be able to operate in the red indefinitely being strapped with a scholorship quota for females. My solution is simple. Make football separate and split all other sports 50-50. Football is unlike any other sport since it requires so many to play and generates the most revenue (majority of schools). I would like to know what you think.

I think every sport should stand on its own. If it is popular with fans and can bring in the revenue, then let it compete with the teams in a Division it can afford.

If football can garner the money to compete in Division 1, then it should do so.

If another sport cannot draw enough fans to support a Division 1 status, then let it compete to the level its income permits.

If a sport, men's or women's, cannot draw enough fans to allow it to compete in any Division competition, then let those players and students compete in intramural leagues.

If tax money is funneled to the schools for support of athletics, split the tax money received for sports between men and women's sports equally.

ahsoisee - you say every sport should stand on it's own or be relegated to intramural status. That's a grand idea but not very practical. Applying that logic, baseball at nearly every major school would be wiped out - including ours. Football at the major schools brings in enough money to fund additional sports. Some of those funds SHOULD go to women's sports.

I disagreed with captaing on the HIVE and still think his delivery needs some polishing. With very few exceptions, everyone I've ever discussed this topic with agrees Title IX is improperly applied. It's the proportionality clause in Title IX that is wrong. His idea to seperate football is not original. Unfortunately the courts have refused it even though it makes the most sense.

I also maintain that he's painting with too broad a brush. Schools like Tulane would be in trouble regardless of Title IX. Football is an expensive sport to compete in. A small school like Tulane has virtually no hope of sustaining success without the benefit of a major conference and revenue sharing.

I really doubt any womens sports can hold their own in the money market with the exception of teams like UT basketball or Hawaii voleyball. Most are a burden to the schools athletic system and its bringing a lot of things down with it. Title IX stinks, and it keeps a ton of highly athletic high school males out of contention for scholarships. If any of you have any little girls who are interested slightly in the sport of golf, please teach her and allow her to play growing up. This is the easiest way to pay for school. A female with a handicap of 10 is 1000 times more likely to get a scholarship than a male who competes at a high level with a handicap of 2. It happened to my best friend. A girl in our high school picked up golf her freshmen year, was a decent player (not good in anyway though), and got her ride to a pretty major college. My friend spent every summer since he was 8 competing all over the south, built his game up nicely, and now is having to bust heads in order to get a look at a smaller college. TITLE IX IS THE WORST IDEA OF ALL TIME. YOU CAN EVEN ASK MY MOM.

Armyjacket...you are correct...that idea (splitting football out) is not original and I did not mean to imply it was. We are "pendulum" society that is always swinging too far left. It is time to bring it back to the center. My methods may need polishing but at least I am speaking about it. The rest of the sheeple are just sitting back and letting it happen. I can't stand idle and witness the carnage without doing something. It is always the vocal minority that has facilitated change in our country. For once I would like to see a vocal majority bring sense and balance to our lawmaking.

Title IX. Isn't that like the affirmative action of college athletics? Discrimination in the name of equality? I don't like it personally but then I have nothing to gain from it. Definitely needs work. Thumbs down in its current form.
