we had rats on the field my frosh year in 74.
i was told rats ripped the tail off the tiger mascot maybe in the 80's or 90's

I remember in the early 70’s the student body yelling “Damn poor rat” until the rats had taken the field and formed the alley. Back then the student body was about all male.

I was a rat the last year of this tradition. 1981. It was pretty cool running from the lower wood bleachers onto the field.
The Upper East Seniors razzed us mercilessly, but then they chanted "Damn Good Rats" afterwards.

I think the Auburn game probably was the death knell for the student body being on the field pregame.

Yes … I just could not remember when the tradition stopped. I knew it was a long, long time ago.

Rats on the field had stopped by mid 80s. Maybe after south stands came down? Think those were freshmen seating by that time. You’d still hear rats on the field chants in the stands, but nobody actually went into the field.

I wish that had been there when I went through. It seems like a lot of traditions get lost over time and no new ones replace them.

I know more or less when the tradition ended, but when did it begin? I was a rat in '62, and we never went on the field.

Whaaa? We had 60 coeds in '71 AND the cheerleaders were all students (for a change.)
