I ran across an old article about the Marshall plane tragedy. Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConnaughty for you movie fans) was the coach they hired to rebuild the team. But the article states he was "the third choice for coach behind assistants from Penn State and Georgia Tech. Any idea who that might have been a candidate from our staff in the early seventies? I assume it was when Carson was still the coach.

Dick Bestwick

Seems like Bestwick was mentioned as possible coach more than once during his tenure at Ga Tech. About the only other possible assistant coach in 1970 with head coaching potential was Jerry Glanville and he did have some connections to the Kentucky/ West Virginia area. But Bestwick was more thank likely the one referenced.

Tricky Dick. He ended up leaving us for UVA and eventually for a job at UGAg.

One of my high school's coaches was an assistant on that Marshall team. Al Carelli was the O-line coach. He left the high school ranks for a GA spot at UNC, and then on to Marshall. A great guy, superb coach, and on the way up.
