How embarrassing to be passed over by nashville. Tell me that the probation thing is behind this punishment.

I wish we had an AD and coach that would politely turn this down. If we did, we could put an end to this "consecutive bowl streak" blubbering. Maybe the settling on mediocrity would come to an end if we decided on only participating in actual bowl games, and not these ridiculous field trips.
It's time to raise the expectations. This is laughing stock material.

Please don't say bowls are just rewards for the players, please!
If so, the Texas Longhorn team would vote to play in the Honolulu "bowl" game.

Just to save some time...

<Insert extra practice time response here>

"Come to Tech where you can play against Auburn (& win), and Miami (& win) then go to a meaningless bowl game against a Mountain West no-body!!!"

While disappointed about the bowl selection myself, you have got to be kidding yourself. I think we all feel we deserve a better bowl, but I would like to see you go into the Tech locker room and tell all the players who busted their asses all year for you that they shouldn't be rewarded. As a fan, all we see is the actual football game. The players get a lot more out of it than just the game. Try telling those players who have never seen the west coast that you don't feel they should get to go because it is too embarassing to you. Give me a flippin break.

There is a huge difference when you are playing for the national championship. Of course you want the national championship. But if you aren't in one of the top tier bowls, then yeah, it is about the trip for the players and a reward.

Pocket, in general, I agee with you...at least with your main point, which is (I think) that we should turn down some of these toilet bowls.

However, I do believe that the players would rather go to a bowl than stay home, so in that sense it's a reward. The trip and all that goes with it is fun for the players, even if the game is not a great one.

I also think a lot of this '"consecutive bowl streak" blubbering' comes from fans like many of us here. In some of the ongoing arguments this year about keeping or firing CG, I read numerous times about our, and his, consecutive bowl streak record as if it were proof of greatness.

Good post, nonetheless.

NG,
I think you made a great point here by pointing out the jaw boxing we took, and that the current players don't need to be the ones punished.

That said, I believe that "for whom are the bowls primarily for" could be a talking point that could be discussed forever.
Not to get the debate started here, I believe that bowl games should be a reward for the players for sure, but the fans should also be thought of. The biggest consideration of a bowl game however, should be about program recognition, and what the game can do for national exposure to the school and football program. This last point will assist in recruiting and in future bowl games.

Now, if our team of the last 5 years is only worthy of the following games:
1) Seattle
2) Silicon
3) Boise
4) Boise (Champ's only because uva had exams)
5) Emerald

then so be it. If these games are all that we have been worthy of, this program needs to admit that it needs to get much better very quickly. Like you pointed out, some of the fanbase has hidden behind this "bowl" streak.

On the other hand, if we have had years that should have put us in better games, we have a lack of respect thing going on within our own conference.
To point: Does anyone really believe that fsu would have gone to Boise or Emerald with a loss Sat. night? It wouldn't have happened. One reason is that Swofford and his boyz would have known that fsu would have told them to stick it. We will never know for sure, but I am convinced of it.

Final thought for now is if our "P" is the reason we are being banished to S.F., I want someone to man up and say it.
This will be the only acceptable reason in my mind.
