I was there last night and I think the band was quite impressive. Granted, they aren't all ours but they played their hearts out and with great enthusiasm while adding the right ambiance to the whole event. They certainly added to the great win and should be applauded.

No doubt. The band actually got quite a few shots on TV. Looking good!

My question is this. Say for instance an intelligent young female student wanted to go to a school where they could keep up their seriously high level HS flag corps skills from an award winning team onto an awarding college experience. Georgia Tech?

You would first want to inform her that the correct term is "Colorguard"

Florida State. My sis-in-law was the captain of their color guard a few years ago. They were pretty serious about it.

The Marching Chiefs are about as big as it gets in collegiate bands and etc.

f$u is actually highly regarded nationally for their band. However, I would like to take the time to point out a major difference between an f$u, and us: They have music majors. They have kids who go to college for the sole purpose of doing music. If they're like ugay, they have kids who are required to marching band to fulfill their degree requirements.

I would put the number of music majors in our band at maybe 3ish. And of course, they are all cross-registered. Granted, we have people who take music classes every semester (many people take multiple), and people who do music minors, but at the end of the day, they still have to go to their regular classes. As a band program, we don't expect to be world renown. However, we will damn sure show up to Tech events, and be as supportive as any Tech fan, if not more. And we will do it with a great sound. So I could care less about the pedigree of an Ohio State, f$u, tennessee, or anyone else for that matter. I'm damn proud to be a member of the Georgia Tech Marching Band, damn proud to represent this institute, and being in the band has been the greatest part of my college experience. Wouldn't trade it for anything!

If she's really serious about colorguard there are various organizations (Drum Corps International springs to mind) that can offer her training over the course of a summer. Of course, this is a little expensive and takes the whole summer, most of which will be spent practicing or on a bus.

The "serious" music majors at FSU mostly look down their nose at the marching band folks.

My wife was a senior section leader and my sis-in-law was captain of the drill team. Neither got music degrees or anything related to band activities.

If she's serious about wanting to be part of a major college band then FSU would be on the list of options.

Doing DCI may actually save you money - it costs something like $2000 for the whole summer, and I'll bet you spend more than that on food and electric bills and gas over the summer. When I did it, the next summer I stayed home, my mom was complaining about the electricity usage being 15% higher than the previous year - until I pointed out that I wasn't there the previous summer.

In addition to DCI, which is more marching band centric, you could suggest WGI, which is focused more on colorguard (Winter Guard International). There are a few quality Winterguards in the Atlanta area.

WGI also does indoor drumline. WGI will be a MUCH different experience than DCI, but it will also be cheaper.
