Standing at the crossroads is okay. I hope we are not standing in the crossroads.

Well the year is half done and we are 4-2. With a little better play we could be 6-0 but no use crying over spilt milk. Time to look forward and focus on the balance of the season. Where do we go from here. Most feel we have the talent and potential to win every game but due to performance to date we also have the potential to lose every game. Well potential and talent are great things to have but it's what you do with it on the field that matters. I know a lot of teams feel they are better than an opponent that they just lost to. This is not unique to Tech (see Clemson vs. Virginia or Texas vs. Oklahoma. It all comes down to how we perform in the games. So far we have come up short at crunch time with someone stepping up and making a key play or two on offense or defense to make the difference in victory or defeat. That is what it will typically come up to in close games. We have to have someone or multiple someones step forward and take it upon themselves to make a big play. You cannot sit back and play read and react on defense, you cannot hope someone else comes through on offense. You have to take it upon yourself to be a difference maker.

So let's look at the remaining games:

Maryland - dead even last year, but we gave them a lot of turnovers. Talent level is comparable and should be a close game down to the wire. On the road you have to give the nod to Maryland unless someone steps up and makes the differecnce for Tech.

Virginia - again dead even last year. We should have some revenge motive here. Talent level is comparable and should be a close game down to the wire. At home we should win but we will need someone to make a play.

NC State - we beat them last year, they seem to have upgraded their talent this year and are certainly on a roll. Great opportunity for us to go up there and knock them out of the ranks of the undefeated. We must get pressure on Rivers and not turn over the ball. We will be a big underdog and will have to have some luck if we hope to pull this one out.

FSU - They beat us pretty handily last year. Not one of our best efforts, I think we were still thinking about what might have been pre 9/11. Let's face it, we do not have the horses to compete with FSU this year. Our only chance is to have them turn the ball over numerous times and us play our best game.

Duke - They played us tough last year despite the score. They are closer to us in talent than many realize at least on the first string. We have them at home and should win but again someone will have to make some plays. If we play to the level we played against WFU we probably will lose.

UGA - This team is one of the luckiest of all times. They are getting the breaks and now they believe they will win. Going into Athens we will probably be facing an undefeated team ranked in the top 2 or 3 in the country. Our talent level is much closer to UGA's than FSU's. If we play like our hair is on fire and they turn it over a few times we can win this game. Oh how sweet it would be to ruin their dream of a National Championship. It's the type of thing that legends are made of. A long shot but possible.

So where does that tend to leave us. I would say a 3-3 finish would be outstanding but a 2-4 finish is more likely. It's possible to go 6-0 or 0-6 and that, after all, is why they play the games.

I just hope we keep fighting and find a way to get better each game.

As Always Go Jackets!
