What are the limitations a booster can do

if there is a high school player that i think maybe could become a GT prospect.

Could someone send this to UGA Boosters. They beg prospects after every HS game. Ha!

essentially you can do nothing. From reading it you're not allowed to talk to kids in HS (9th-12th grade) about college/future at all, regardless of if they play a sport or not.

Looks like a lot of legalese to cover every possible occurence when in reality those that are going to break the rules are going to break them anyways.

If they are a friend of the family, you can talk to them as you would any normal conversation. But, this is up to interpretation later, so across the board, the athletic department asks that you just pass the name along to the appropriate coach and let them deal with it.

I can assure you first hand however, that it is generally a waste of time, unless they are a football player and then they may look. I have first hand experience where multiple coaches at Tech just ignore the information. I always thought that they put together a mailing list for camps or something, but I never saw any activity from a "lead".

Wow, I didn't know it was that restrictive. Even if you are already friends with the prospect or family, you aren't allowed to encourage them to come to GT

Here's an excerpt:

As a representative of the institution's athletics interest, you are permitted to:
  • Notify our coaches about prospects in your area that may be strong additions to our teams.
  • Attend high school or two-year college athletic contests or other events where prospects may compete, however, you may not contact the prospect or the prospect's relatives.
  • Continue existing friendships with families of prospects, but you may not attempt to recruit the prospect.

Like I said, a friend of the family and "recruiting" is up for interpretation. Realistically, a friend is not going to turn you in for nudging them toward Tech however.

Guy at my work says UGA boosters go to pop warner games he coaches and encourage 10 year olds to play for UGA.

What if my son wants to play college football (ftr, i have no son) and I tell him that I will gladly give him 100K when he graduates from GT after he's done playing football there....BUT, I tell him that if he goes to UGA, his car will be set on fire and he will have no father when he graduates.

Is this an NCAA violation?

No, but I think that would be consistent with the father qualities as laid out in Proverbs.

I would think no, unless you had the car burning sponsored by Zippo Lighters.
