The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his "Hokie" yell which is still used today.

The official definition of "hokie" is "a loyal Virginia Tech Fan."

The bird is a "HokieBird" which has evolved from a turkey. Virginia Tech teams were once called the "gobblers!"

Short answer: A Hokie is a loyal turkey.

according to Dictionary.com, a Hokie is a castrated turkey... I'm trying to hold in my laughter

Straight from dictionary.reference.com:

Main Entry: hokiePart of Speech: nDefinition: an emasculated turkey

Who are we to argue with such an astute authority, anyway?

Neutered turkey works for me.

hey. I use WikiPedia for research and YouTube for factual documentary sources.

Dictionary.com seems legit to me.

I'll be done with it after Saturday. Hopefully, it's the last we see/hear of the coach this year.

An Appalachian breed (close breeding) individual who for lack of better sense lives in the woods without indoor plumbing or electricity, later some how attends a small Technicial / Agriculture School located near Blacksburg VA. Said individual later becomes an employee at the local Wal-mart or K-mart.

Caution, a group of people like this will be visiting the 'big city' this weekend, their first experience outside the 'haller' will be to Atlanta. They will be wearing hunting orange and camo with overalls. Those wearing shoes have been to the big city twice.

Lets go Jackets,

Damn, I'd hate to hear the ones that didn't win.
