where does GT stackup w/ regard to talent. It is one of the coaches job is to bring in the talent, but according to Winklepleck (sp?) in the AUC GT has been recruiting kids that cannot graduate.

I would put Clemson and VT talent as better than GT. Also add BC to this list b/c of QB but when he leaves they fall below GT or equal to .

On paper I would say Miami, Virginia, and F$U, however this may not be reality.

MD and NCST are probably the same talent level as GT and the rest fall below this level.

Wake's coach is by far doing the best job based on talent and the only coach in the ACC that can really boast about his performance over the last 4 years.

If you want GT to perform like USC(west), LSU, or UF then you need to bring in those same type of players. Not one of those coaches would be competing for national championship w/ GT's roster.

What GT needs is a super QB like KY. If you recruit the right QB a school like GT can break through but only with a superior QB.

In every game GT has lost the other team's QB was superior. In the MD game it was only for a half but with a team like MD you cannot take a half off and expect to win.

Not sure about LSU's coach, but I would lay money that either Carrol or Meyer would both have an ACC Championship and 2 wins over UGa after 6 years. They are great coaches. Of course, neither would be here for a full 6 years either.

As far as raw talent goes, I would rank the ACC as follows:

Starters:
VT, FSU
Clem, Miami, GT
UVa, BC, UMd, NCSt, UNC
Wake, Duke

Total team depth:
Miami, FSU
UNC,VT,UVa,Clem
GT,BC,UMd,NCSt
Wake,Duke

FSU and Miami have completely squandered their talent with poor QB coaching.

we are in the top 5 of the ACC in talent.

1. FSU
2. Miami
3. Clemson
4. GT
5. Vatech
6. Maryland
7. BC
8. Virginia
9. Wake
t-10. NC state
t-10. UNC

20. Duke

I think we are somewhere in the middle third, with the trend being upwards.

[edited to add] That said, I wouldn't trade one of our players, even if it were not against NCAA regs. We've got a great group of young men representing us...Mike

You could almost compare it to the basketball team from last year. We have several REALLY good players. The type that would start on a lot of teams. The type that will be playing in the pros. We also have some pretty solid players. Would start on some other teams. But we also have some guys that would not sniff 2nd or 3rd on some other depth charts.

I feel our recruiting has improved to where we are getting more of the really good guys, and a lot more of the pretty solid guys. I think one of the keys to a good football team are having enough of the solid type guys. Guys who may not be the best in the world, but when you put enough of them together, they can play well...

I'm not sure why this really matters. Are you suggesting we lose because of our talent? Or because of our QBs? Or are you just curious about how good we think our team is?

I don't see anyone suggesting we should be an LSU or USC so I don't see the point of that comment.

We do not play a single team this year that has more than marginally better talent than us and we have seniors and juniors playing just about every position.

We have been very fortunate to have had the winning seasons we have under Gailey.

Did you know that during the 5+ year Gailey regime we have been outscored by our ACC opponents?

Or that we have been outscored by our opposition during the regular season 4 out of 5 years?

That our defense has only allowed 19.65 points per game over the past 5 years?

Gailey has been very lucky to have the modest record that he has.

What does it really matter, that former cowboy OFFENSIVE JUGGERNAUT can coach em up.

Based on the recruiting gurus, last year is the first year that we have been in the upper echelon. On that basis, most ACC schools have better talent than GT. Our success or lack thereof has been based on the strength and conditioning improvements and coaching them up. Hopefully, last year's recruiting will continue going forward and we'll have some top talent as well.
As an example, I think it is incredible that we had 2 TEs make the roster of NFL teams and one actually starting. They certainly were not the top TEs coming out of HS.

That's the point gtguy. Ranking of most players coming out of HS is a crap shoot. Some guys are obviuos, some are great athletes but can't learn the little things, some guys outwork everybody else. We have plenty of talent to beat everyone on our schedule.

I would rank the talent in tiers:

1.) Miami and FSU (maybe i am going on reputation, they don't really seem more talented).
2.) GT, VT, Clemson
3.) UVA, UNC, NC State, Maryland, BC (play much better due to a great QB)
4.) Wake (maybe should be higher, it's just hard for me to think they have a lot of talent).
5.) duke

This is an area where Gailey and company have done well relative to their rankings. This staff has been good at evaluating talent. Our top prospects almost always pan out and we find a lot of talented lower ranked prospects. Too many deep sleepers early hurt our depth and talent at certain positions (DB, OL, WR).

UVA has just as much talent as we do. Groh is pretty much the worst coach at developing them. They are top 25 every year in recruiting.

This was true his first few years but not anymore. Their talent level is not what it was a couple of years ago.

I would like to see a recruiting list of recruit classes THAT ACTUALLY SHOWED UP AT SCHOOL -not counting the dropoffs. We MAY be in the top 5 on that list.

1. Clemson
2. FSU
3. Va.Tech
4. NC St.
5. Mia (defensive backs gives them the edge over us)
6. GT
7. Wake
8. BC
9. UNC
10. MD
11. UVA
12. Duke

BC at 8 is a tough call, I could switch them with Wake and still be happy.
