Does anyone know the scoop on Dixon? He was moved to fullback and played quite a bit against Vandy and Uconn High but did not get to carry the ball at all. Then against klimpsum Foschi is at fullback and Dixon is not heard from.
I know he was a highly acclaimed running back out of Texas and I was really hoping that a backfield of Dixon and Hollings would result in more option play and a better overall running game .
Anyone know the real story ? Also are the other fullbacks still hurt?

Last I heard, Chan said that Dixon was struggling picking up the position. With Hollings playing so well, I think the coaches wanted a more powerful blocker at FB so we can get Tony the ball. I would imagine the gameplan would determine how much time Dixon gets. Johnson was banged up and I think that really slowed his progress. He has a ways to go. Jackson just doesn't seem to have a lot of pop to him.

I'd like to see Dixon get some carries...

With Ford and Hatch out, it seems that he could be used at both TB and FB saturday.I'd love to see what he could do at TB....

It was clear last week that Hollings needed some relief - he was clearly exhausted in the 4th Q

Hollings was clearly exhausted last Saturday...the TV sideline reporter picked up on it and Hollings said so in the paper. Hollings said that O'Brien noticed he was exhausted and switched him out a few times in the 4th quarter.
Buck said they have decided to get Hollings and average of 25 carries per game (he got 23 at klimpsum).
I was really hoping that we could use Dixon at the fullback position not just to block but to keep the defense honest and take some pressure off Hollings so they couldn't key on him all the time. A good fullback can absolutely kill a defense.

We would all love to have Dixon, Ford, Hatch, et. al. be able to spell Hollings (w/o severe dropoff) and keep him fresh during the 4th quarter crunch time. Unfortunately, Dixon is having a hard time fulfilling his promise that he arrived w/out of TX. O'leary was reluctant to play him because of the fumblitis that he had at times. I was excited about the move to fullback since I thought he could help us out more there and get some meaningful PT. Foschi is a better blocker right now.

As Axe pointed out, Dixon is still learning the position, blocking schemes, assignments, etc. I think that we will see his PT increase as we get deeper in the season and he grasps the position better.

On a side note, it looks like ACE will be seeing PT to spell Hollings. The coaches stated that he can play either the fullback or tailback spot.

Here's to both ACE and Dixon being able to be productive in the backfield; we need the help.

I think its obvious in this offensive scheme that the FB is a blocker (when there is a FB), hence Foschi gets the nod over the slight (for the position) Dixon. With all the injuries you would think Dixon would be better off back at TB spelling Hollings and getting some PT.

The fullback in this offense can be deadly running the ball as well as catching passes (a la Ed Wilder). The primary responsibility of the fullback is to block in the offense but several key carries a game and a couple of pass receptions to a good fullback (possibly Dixon) could really make the difference in this offense. So far we have wasted the fullback position as an offensive threat.

I agree that FB could be a weapon, but the FB hasn't been used in the offense for much except blocking since Fridge left.

Why don't you call your beloved BOB and ask him why?

It is already obvious that Buck has hijacked the offense....BOB is the designated scapegoat.

I like the idea of having the big TE type at FB. Excellent size and O-line blocking skills as well as hands coming out of the backfield but they also should have some kind of speed. Good idea but maybe it needs more work. I don't get Dixon as FB unless he's getting some kind of touches. Otherwise, put him back at TB to spell Hollings and <fingers crossed> looking forward to seeing Ace in a game situation.

Gailey caused the fumble against Maryland... didnt score enough points at VA... what did Gailey ever do to you?? I know you didnt catch him with your wife, because you cant be married !!

Same song, second verse from me. I don't give a rat if the running back cannot block as long as he can run. How many have considered the reason we have a hard time recruiting the great halfbacks and fullbacks at Tech?

If I was a great back in high school and knew I would not be used at a college, because I did not like to block, I would not even think of going to that college. A good back comes to college to run the ball. If he can also block, that is great, but I want a back for toting the leather.

As BeeWare has stated, lets put more players in the backfield to run the ball and keep the defense off balance.

Same song, third verse: you can fool more defensive people with backfield fakes than you can with one fullback blocking one defensive player.

It is hard to learn to block at FB when you are used to being a RB.(I did that in HS)Even Ed Wilder had problems the first 2 yrs picking the right guy and using the right blow to be effective.
Dixon missed a block on the goaline that could have been crucial but Hollings' uncanny drive overcame the mistake.Dixon will get better but he is still only a 215lb FB running into 230lb LBs also.So technique is vital.
